|
|
I was under the impression that the 6.75 maps wouldn't work in TomTom V5, but I got a mail today from TomTom which says:
"Select that you have Navigator 5 and PDA “Other” you will then be able to purchase the Navigator 5 v6.75 maps"
I know that 6.60 work, but not 6.75. Comparing V5 and V6 maps, the main difference is that there is no longer an MPR and MAC file, so I wonder if they simply add these files to the v6 maps to make them work..
Is it true that 6.75 IS available for TT5, or are TomTom Customer Services confused?

They are confused. 675 maps will not be seen by TTN5. _________________ Lutz

Sad state of affairs isn't it, when TomToms own support people can get this wrong!!
I am all for buying a standalone unit now, but my problem is that my car has a "Heat Reflective Windscreen" which is a real problem for GPS, and by 'upgrading' it will actually be a step backwards for me.
I think I might just go for the 660 maps for now and this will give me a few months/years grace!

Before I posted this question here, I replied to the mail that TomTom sent me.. They have confirmed that the 675 maps ARE available for Navigator 5.. The plot thickens:
"Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support.
If you were to follow the steps within the link below you will be able to download and use v6.75 on your navigator 5. This is not very clear in our website and it is a problem we are aware of. We apologise for any confusion.
With Best Regards
The TomTom Customer Support Team" |

Here is what TT site actually says...
Question
I currently own NAVIGATOR 5/MOBILE 5. Can I buy the newest maps?
Answer
TomTom has released map version 6.75 (Spring 2007) for Navigator 6.
If you have a NAVIGATOR 5 or MOBILE 5 device that is compatible with NAVIGATOR 6, you can purchase the 6.75 maps and you will receive the latest NAVIGATOR 6 application for free.
See below to find out if your device is compatible with NAVIGATOR 6.
If your NAVIGATOR 5 or MOBILE 5 device is not compatible with Navigator 6, you can purchase a previous release of map version 6 (release 6.6 of winter 2006) from the map shop. This map is compatible with NAVIGATOR 5 / MOBILE 5. The NAVIGATOR 6 application is not included. |

I have tried it too but I think that the reason the 675 maps aren't recognised in TT5 is that they are missing the MAC and MPR files which are found with the 660 maps and below.
I wonder if the maps would work, if they included valid MAC and MPR files? I know this is almost certainly oversimplfying this.. But I am nearly positive that the reason the list is empty on TT5 is because these files are not there.
I realise that 675 is not supported in TT5.. Everything points to this.. But when TomTom Customer services say that it is, how am I ment to ignore this?

Hi All
Yeah ... I was wondering the same thing ...
Would like to know if TomTom 6.75 Maps will work on Mobile 5 or 5.2x ???
I've got a Nokia 6680, Sony Ericsson P800 and HP iPAQ hx4700.
Navigator 6 will only work with the PDA not with my mobiles.
TomTom 6 only works on Symbian ver 3 and UIQ 3 (P990i W950i) mobile phones ...
Been trying all sorts of copying and renaming ... but no luck ....
Any ideas ????
Thanks |

From what I have read, 675 may be a step backwards from 660 anyway, so 660 may do the trick for the time being.
But it doesn't bode well.. If 660 is the last set of maps for the TT5, then its not going to be long before I say goodbye to my Palm based solution

Yeah .. I have the same problem ...
Why change hardware (Mobile phones\PDA) .... AND ... Software (TomTom 6) .... to be able to use the 6.75 Maps ???
What is the difference between the 6.75 Maps and the earlier versions for Mobile 5 ???
Thanks |

People who had compatible devices are offered a free upgrade to TTN6 and the latest TTN6 maps.
However, people whose PDAs are not suitable to run TTN6 have not been forgotten by TomTom. They have brought out alternative versions of the latest maps which will run under TTN5. This is what you get if you tick "other" when asked to name your device.
This seems to be very good customer service from TomTom. Even though your PDA may not be supported for TTN6, you can still have the latest map updates.

So you're saying there are v675 maps available for TTN5? Their website specifically says that's not the case. What evidence have you got for this? (no offence, I hope you're right). |

Hi Robin2 and jdee
I agree with jdee, TomTom website says that maps 6.75 are not compatable with TomTom Mobile\Navigator 5.
Map versions 6.60 are the latest version that will work with TomTom 5. ... according to the website that is ...
The problem that I have is that South African Maps only Start at version 6.75 ...
Therefore will only work with TomTom 6 ...
which will only work with certain hardware ...
like the PDA (iPAQ hx4700)
and NOT the Symbian ver 2 (Nokia 6680) and UIQ 2 (Sony Ericsson P800) mobile phones.
I hope Robin2 is right ... but My question still stands ...
What is the difference between 6.75 Maps and previous Maps (5 and 5.2x compatable) ??? and Why won't it work ???
I looked at file names ... I see no difference ... so it would have to be in the actual software cab or sis files .... I've tried copying the map files to the directories in TomTom 6 thereby overwriting the maps that work .. but still no luck ...
Anyways ... I don't think it's possible ... Maybe in time ... patch or workaround ???
Thanks |

Whatever the 'differences' are they are unlikely to be fixed by TomTom as the restrictions will be down to licensing of the new maps that they have to agree with the map suppliers. Equally they are unlikely to be simple differences - in order to prevent 'patches' (pronounced "hacks"). It isn't in TomTom's interest to support older versions of their s/w. Like it or like it not that is their chosen strategy. One day they will more than likely stop developing PDA based solutions as these must cause more support hassles than their "all-in-ones". _________________ Phil |

Previous posters are correct - the latest maps you can currently download for TTN5 are 6.6. For UK and Europe this is not much of a problem, as the differences between this and 6.75 are slight (according to TomTom themselves!), and for those people with NavTeq 6.6 Western Europe the change to 6.75 TeleAtlas Western Europe might even be a retrograde step.
But for JugHead with his South African maps the situation is more problematic. I think his only hope is a direct appeal to TomTom support, in the (very slender) hope that they can help
