. . . . . . . I can't seem to find how to navigate from A to C via B!!
Basically I am visiting one of the Islands of the West Coast of Scotland. My 910 keeps giving me a route that includes two ferry crossings instead of just the one. I'm sure that this would be the 'fastest route' but the second (unnecessary) ferry crossing makes it also the most expensive route. If I route via B, I only need the one crossing and so the journey is a fair bit cheaper, despite the few extra miles.
I've looked at Advanced Planning and also Itinerary Planning but can't seem to find the how/where to do this; I'm sure it must be able to be done, what with the 910 being such an advanced bit of kit, but it must be me just being thick!!
Help please!!!! _________________ marcustandy,

Hello Alix and thanks for the reply.
I was really hoping that wouldn't be the answer . I like using the 'estimated arrival time' facility on screen which wouldn't bee too accurate if I had to enter the journey in two parts. Not the end of the world, I know, but a tadge annoying all the same.

How about Navigate to and let it do so, then Find Alternative ... and Avoid Part of Route (name of "port or village" where the ferry is). Or perhaps Find Alternative ... and Calculate Alternative to see what it comes up with - if you do it enough times it might get what you want!! _________________ Dennis

Haha!!!! Done it!!!
I was messing/experimenting (well, actually looking for the 'avoid' function!! ) and as I looked closer at the map I found my 'point B', centered the 'cursor' on it and double-tapped the cursor button on the bottom row. That then brought up some options, one of which was 'Route via'. A click on that and the route was recalculated via point B and without the second unwanted ferry crossing!!
I'm not convinced that I have explained that very well . . . . but I know what I did!! . If you need it explained better, just ask and i'll try to go through it again in step-by-step stages. _________________ marcustandy,

. . . . . . . although I have now found its limitation - you can only have one 'navigate via' point. Still not ideal but better than I first thought.
I am tempted to just have the laptop on the passenger seat with AutoRoute 2007 and my GPS mouse; that way I can include as many 'via point B's as I want!! Grrrr _________________ marcustandy,

Thanks Alix - the Itinerary planning was the way forward. I managed to add enough 'points' along the route I wanted and now have that itinerary saved. I will now be able to have the ETA displayed and know that it is as accurate as usual!!
Thanks to you all for your help!! 8) 8) 8) _________________ marcustandy,

I tried this, and found the ETA wildly inaccurate, because it didn't take into account the fact that I arrived at the ferry an hour before sailing, the ferry was then 40 mins late, and we took an extra 15 mins crossing because of bad weather.
I now always route in two stages. One to the ferry port to make sure I get there in time, and the second once I arrive at the port. By setting up my final destination as a favourite, it's only a few seconds to change destination. I still sit at the departure port looking at incorrect ETAs, but once off the ferry at the other side, it only takes a minute or so to reaquire the satellites, and ETA is then displayed. |
