I've just bought a Garmin 310D and am pleased with it. Can someone explain the file structure on the device - what does what etc.. What happens if I download the same POIs or Waypoints twice? Does it waste space or can I tidy up later? Can you copy files without using Mapsource?
Also, for some reason my Garmin won't take me home the best way - it avoids a particular road like the plague. It does the same in Mapsource. Obviously I know how to get home, but how can I tidy it up so it takes me home properly? I've tried creating a route in Mapsource and downloading it, but it doesn't seem to work. |

Regarding the POI's -
Using Garmin's POILoader s/w you effectively re-create the entire POI database each time. The key to this is to keep a folder on your PC where you keep ALL your POI information in .csv format and point POILoader at that. It will then re-create the POI file on the nuvi. (poi.gpi?).
As for the other files I'm sure someone will let you know what they are for - but there's not a lot you can do with them - except tweak some of the voices using ASH10's voice utility (see sticky in the nuvi forum). The best thing to do with all the files is to take a backup (regularly) to your PC. _________________ Phil |

A strange thing occurs when I try and load maps onto my Garmin using Mapsource: A box pops up and it says "There was a problem communicating with the device". If I insert an SD card, I can send (European) maps to the card, but still not to the Garmin. I have no problems sending or receiving Waypoints etc..
It seems to work OK with European maps on the card and GB maps on the Garmin. I have over 90mb of spare space on the Garmin and the maps are nowhere near that size. |
