I'm assuming that if I buy Maps 010-10679-00 on SD that I can load them on my C510; also if I buy Maps 010-10679-50 on microSD that I can load them on my i3.
If I buy Maps 010-10816-00 on DVD and suitable cards can I load them on both UK purchased Streetpilots?

both @£179.99 ::ouch:: - I think you're right.

1) "Note: You cannot use this product to update the maps on your preloaded Garmin device. "
That presumably means you don't get an unlock code, or any means of generating one, for the I3 or C510...would presumably work on your laptop, or let you upgrade units for which you already have a code (which you don't).
2) U.S. List Price: $139.27 (for domestic US market only)
I bet they would direct you to the equivalent UK product 010-10474-00 "MapSource City Navigator North America - with Certificate for full unlock" a snip at £281.99 - are they being serious? It would be cheaper to buy a satnav in the States and eBay it afterwards!
Do you actually want it on both the I3 and the C510, or were you just pricing up the options? Because when you've got the product and a valid unlock code, you're allowed to generate one more unlock code at the Garmin website for another Garmin unit that you own.
they have North America on SD at $150, and on DVD at $106. When you add in p&p - and they would appear to ship to UK - it seems like a good deal. I haven't used them myself, but am seriously thinking of, for later this year. Let me know what you think. _________________ Garmin I3 October 2006

Both TwinSuns and Provantage seem to be selling them for about the same price. I'm only really interested in getting the maps on the C510, but if I could have them on the i3 for no extra cost then why not?
I'm just not quite confident enough that I'll be able get the DVD version to work, is there anything that can go wrong if I order the SD version for about $160?

Well in this case, it's the same part number, so you wouldn't have thought so.
However, you could get to the Garmin website, with your new 8 digit coupon code, ready to generate your 25 digit unlock code(s)...and it could say - "Sorry those unit serial numbers are European models" -

Sorry for all the newbie questions, but will I need an unlock code for an SD card?
Maybe someone who actually knows what they're talking about, will jump in in a minute :D
As I understand it though- that's the procedure. I only got my C510 at Xmas, but I had it replaced under warranty. I ended up with two lots of unlock codes. The maps files that were on the units were identical, but the unlock codes definitely weren't interchangeable.
You could always email Garmin support: Tell them you've moved to the U.S. and brought your European C510 with you? They should be able to give you the definitive Part Number, that will give you access to City Navigator North America...of course, they might not be prepared to ship it to the UK, but you've already solved that problem.
(My experiments were complicated by the fact that the C510 only seems to read the licence file GMAPPROM.UNL after a major reset, like a firmware change. It must suck the number into some other region (like it does the startup splash screen) and doesn't then use the .UNL file in normal operations. The 1st unit was supplied with a .UNL file, but the 2nd one wasn't- I soon ended up creating one!)
In a nutshell: "It should perhaps be noted that these cards aren't copy protected in the conventional meaning of the word. Instead, on each card, there is an unlock code already installed. This code is tied to the card itself, so if you copy the whole thing to another card, it will no longer run.

Thanks in anticipation
If you buy the microSD card (010-10679-50) , you could use it on both your i3 and on your 510 with the SD adaptator.
If you buy the DVD, it comes with 2 unlock codes that you could also use on your I3 and on your C510.
Up to you to compute the best offer according to your need.

My c510 failed to fire up the pre-installed maps following a crash whilst using WebUdater, after the 6th e-mail to Garmin Tech Supp they finally replied saying that I had probably lost the required .UNL file (I can't find one in my original or subsequent backups) and that I would need to 'phone them whilst on-line. Unfortunately my work prevents me from doing this.
The unit works fine via the maps on the SD card, but as I'm building up my POIs I worry that I may require the space for that purpose.
Regarding the attached quote, what form does the .UNL take, where do you create the .UNL file?

A couple more questions if I may, Am I right in thinking that if I delete all the unwanted voices in the unit that the freed up memory would be available for additonal maps, POIs etc?
Is there a limit to the size of SD card I can use?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Incidently as a truck driver I've found the c510d excellent, I can also recomend BridgeX at lowbridges.com.
I am slowly building weight and width restriction POIs which I will gladly share.

Lost eh? - very remiss of you -- If it's not in your backup, then the chances are, that like me, you didn't have it in the first place. If you see this thread (Page 2) we went through the details of recreating the file (basically, the 25 digit code from the yellow voucher is entered using Notepad (omitting the dashes))

Yes. Also you can put POI's on an SD card. If you see this thread and follow the link, you'll find some info. on freeing-up space. [BTW - despite what it says, you don't have to brave to click the link, just brave to follow its advice :D ]

Hi Phil, sorry to take so long to get back, thanks for the info but following your instructions didn't work for me (although it obviously did for others).
I have tried everything repeatedly but still no joy, I even tried the syntax within the .unl file which came with my MapSource Europe v9 update DVD (using my original 25 digit code), all to no avail. This evening I updated the software to v5.40 and tried again, still no different I guess I'll have to wait until I have a day at home and phone the support team.
Thanks for trying
Brian

Does the Garmin registration site help at all?...sorry can't remember the exact URL, but somewhere under "My Account", "My Garmin" or some-such, there's the Mapsource Unlock section ...
You can enter the other information from the yellow voucher (Registration code, unit serial no) and it generates the corresponding unlock code - at least you might be able to double-check that the unlock code it gives is the same as the one you have already been entering. Presumably the Unit Serial Number on the yellow voucher does match the bar-code sticker on the bottom of the unit.

Yep, done all that , everything matches in "My Account" including the registered unlock code, serial no. etc.
The unlock file saves ok, I thought that perhaps the piece of the program that calls up the .unl file might have been lost so I upated to the latest software version & tried creating a new .unl file again, still doesn't work.
Just one thing, when I check the contents of the unit with Explorer I seem to have created a seperate "Garmin" folder containing duplicate files & folders (probably when I tried to go back to my very first backup). I'm unsure whether to delete either and am reluctant to delete them both and just re-install one of the early backups, especially now that I've updated the software.
cheers

If it helps, here is an image of the file system on my C510 http://geepeeex.googlepages.com/tts11.jpg. I would say that checking the disk for errors (with CHKDSK or the Explorer gui equivalent) would be a good thing to do and getting rid of all the duplication likewise.
I don't believe there are any files that have to match a specific firmware version. Note: you'll notice from the picture of my file system, that the firmware files ((*.GCD, *.BIN, 00*) aren't required for the unit to function-they get used once, then ignored-I deleted mine, because I wanted the space.
