Thought I'd start the ball rolling on this one before giving any technical details of set up and so on.

Was travelling along with satellite reception all lovely. Turned the radio on, all still lovely. Put a CD on, lost reception. Turned off CD, reception came back. Repeated three or four times, same result. Listened to radio, reception fine all the way home.

That's the short version, not involving the process of working out what was causing the signal loss - but any initial thoughts on what on Earth's going on?

Richard

Possibly EMC interference between the units, can you specify car type, stereo and sat nav you are using, also have you coupled the units together in way such as the audio output of the nav unit to the Aux in of the stereo? - Mike

It's a Ford Puma (with heated windscreen), JVC KD SC 601 Radio/CD player and Garmin i3 sat nav.

As it happens I was playing a self burnt mp3 CDR if that makes any difference. Think it happens with commercial CDs as well, though.

Sorry, forgot to add - no the units are not coupled together in any way. And the sat nav is stuck on the windscreen (as opposed to on the dashboard or elsewhere), top right corner as you look at it from the driving seat.

As you will already have gathered, athermic or heated screens attenuate the satellite signals. It could be that the staellite signal, already at an incredibly small level, is being swamped by electromagnetic interference from the CD unit. My Scenic has an athermic screen, and I have to use an external antenna for the best reception. My solution for day-to-day driving is to fix the sat-nav to the side window. I haven't noticed any deterioration when using the CD player myself, and I would have thought that the shielding around the audio unit would be adequate to prevent interference - you must just be unlucky with your combination of sat-nav positioning/heated screen/CD unit. Change one out of three and you'll probably be OK.

If you want to try an external antenna, the one from Maplins is a good buy, just under a tenner.

we have a puma and an i3. never had any problems with signals though in either the i3, go300 or nuvi 360... however, we're using the factory fitted cd player

this sounds like something from the twighlight zone!!

So, MaFt, if you have the Puma (hopefully with heated screen), the I3, no problems with interference, then, my dear Holmes, by a process of elimination, the problem must lie with -- the CD Unit. Suggest you swap cars or I3's with MaFt to finally pin it down. OK?

Blimey - I presume you don't look at the screen then? Wink

I did fear my heated windscreen would mess up the signal, but the little green "volume bars" do stay pretty full most of the time. The supposition about electromagnetic interference makes sense although I never got past O-level physics so have to take that on trust! I presume the CD player generates its own massive electromagnetic "field" that the radio simply doesn't?

Actually, it was a bit weird at first, having the I3 on the side window. The positioning on my car allows me to have it quite a bit forward of the driving position, so I can glance at it occasionally, just like glancing at the door mirror. Of course, I only have it in this position if I really know where I'm going, so I just listen for the "bongs". For serious navigating, I stick it on the front screen and use the external antenna.

The interference from the Cd player might come from its disc motor, or the control circuitry. I'd give the external antenna a try, unless you want to change your CD player!
