There are a couple of ways to enhance your device to issue spoken alerts when approaching speed cameras, for this to work you need to be using the PocketGPSWorld speed camera database, the alternate speed camera database offered by TomTom cannot currently be configured in this way.
Modified data.chk (the old method)
For quite some time the way to obtain spoken camera alerts has been made possible by swapping a file named data.chk with the new file containing the spoken alerts the version you download must match your software version for this to work.
Note this method is known to work on earlier TomTom devices including mobile, as this method is no longer supported for new versions of the TomTom software the ogg file method detailed below is the prefered method.

OGG File Methods - Works with version 5, 6 & 7 Software
Alternately you can use a newer (easier) method to obtain spoken camera alerts, this method employs audio files using the ogg file format.
UPDATE - there is a more concise set of instructions and an alternative method
(where the sounds are put in their own "sounds" folder) HERE. This page also has all the available voices to download.
Note this method is known to work with TomTom Go products and TomTom Navigator software versions 5,x 6,x and 7,x are supported, TomTom Mobile cannot use this method.
For simplicity I have summarised how to achieve spoken alerts using the ogg files below:
Firstly you need a set of audio files in the ogg format, visit the ogg file download page on this site which contains the correct sound files in sets that are named to correspond with the various speed camera downloads that are available - see Here
These files should be downloaded to your PC, the ogg files from PocketGPSWorld are already named correctly.
Not all the speed camera categories are included within the voice pack download from the above site, pMobiles for example are missing in some downloads, you can simply use the mobile warning in place of the missing file, or make your own warning using an online Text To Speech Engine, or using the Audacity sound editor.
The suitably named ogg files should be placed into the map folder where your POI’s are located, do not put them in a sub-folder.
With the files in place start the TomTom Navigator and go to Change Preferences/ Manage POI/ Warn when near POI (this MUST be done even if your camera POI’s have been previously configured).
Select the first camera in the list, if asked whether you want to delete or remove the warning answer NO.
You should now be asked to select the warning distance
Followed by the Warn Only if POI on route –
please set-up these options as per your normal preference, remember everyone will use different settings dependent upon how they use the device.
Now repeat the above, setting up the POI warning for EACH camera category you have installed to the device.
At no point during the configuration should you be asked to choose a warning sound
(For users of version 7 software please see the note further down, which explains a known bug in the software).
If you are prompted to select a warning sound (as per the screen shot above) there is something wrong with your added files, or the camera POI you are configuring doesn't have a corresponding ogg file (pMobiles for example)
NOTE FOR TOMTOM 910 OR x20 USERS
In order to use the ogg files you must select "Sound Effect" when configuring your POI Warnings:
In addition users of Navcore 7 software should be aware of the following:
There is however a bug within the version 7 software.
When setting up POI Warnings using ogg files you are presented with this screen:
If you answer No to the question the device will lock up displaying this screen:
The only way around this is to press the reset switch. If you answer Yes with respect to the warning sound (even though you heard nothing) the device will have picked up the sound file, and it will use it by default for any associated warnings.
How To Test Your New Warnings
You could go out and drive past some local camera installations, there is a much easier way though that doesnt waste valuable fuel:
Switch on the TomTom device, or start the application as applicable.
Go to Advanced Planning (AtoB)
Set a departure point using Address/ Postcode FY43NN House number 95.
Set a destination point using Address/ Postcode PR41AX House number 33.
Now go to Show Route/ Route Demo, set the replay speed to around 100% and sit back watch/ listen, you should receive a Gatso 30 warning within about 45 seconds followed very closely by a Mobile 30 warning.
Additional Supporting information
Depending which Speed Camera database you are using will determine the number of audio files required please see the lists below.
For those using the Single file download:

When re-naming the files make sure that Windows Explorer tools/ Folder Options view tab is configured as shown below, otherwise it is quite easy for the resultant file to have two file extensions (then it doesn’t work):
If it still doesn't work - Most likely causes:
Incorrect name of the ogg file – remember it must exactly match the corresponding ov2 and bmp file. Pay particular attention to the use of the underscore within the file name.
Are the files incorrectly named using two file extensions? Quite often this is caused when the files are re-named without first turning off the option to “Hide file extensions for know file types” (as shown earlier on this page).
Have you placed the ogg files into the correct active map directory, with the current software and/ or map upgrade process taking place, it is not uncommon to find users have inadvertently placed the ogg files in the old map, to be left wondering why the device cannot see the files it needs. How many map folders are on your device, if its more than one check where you have placed the ogg files. Also ensure the actual Active map is the correct one, you might have a new map loaded but not selected within the TomTom Navigator application. Change Preferences/ Manage Maps/ Switch Map.
Do you have a modified data.chk file still loaded to the device? - if so replace this with the original unmodified file, if you don't still have the unmodified data.chk file simply re-install the TomTom application to the unit as this action will replace the modified file with the correct one.

Hi Mike,
I successfully dowloaded and installed the new WE Maps, Copied all the ov2, bitmap and ogg files from the Great Britain map folder into the WE map folder but the safety camera voice warning doesn't work. The cameras show on the display but no sound warning of any kind. I guess I need to copy another file, but which? _________________ Bazzza

First of all have you selected the new map on the device? go to Change Preferences/ Manage Maps/ Switch Map and make sure the correct map is selected, once this is done simply configure you camera warnings one at a time which can be found at Change Preferences/ Manage POI/ Warn When Near POI - you will need to select each camera category in turn. - Mike
