I want to buy this USB GPS receiver and connect it to a Palm m130. Are there any cables that will convert the proprietary Palm m130 serial interface to USB? There does exist USB cables for hotsyncing, but I suspect they can only connect to a desktop machine.
BTW, I spotted a cable that will convert to a standard PS2, so if it would be possible to convert the PS2 to USB, that would be useful.
I could simply get a PS2 GPS receiver, but that would not be as versatile once the m130 becomes obsolete and is abandoned; plus the USB GPS receiver is cheaper. |

not possible. You need a plain old serial GPS for your Palm.

Thanks. Though it turns out cabling is the least of my problems. Even if I go straight serial, there is no software available for Palm OS 4.1 anymore - at least, not in the US. |

Thanks for the tip! www.mapopolis.com indicates that version 5 of their software runs on "Palm OS 3/4". I assume that includes 4.1. What's confusing is that they indicate that version 2 of the software is for Palm OS 5. Did they decide to support older PDAs after Palm OS 5?
What else is interesting is that the price is only $34 for the engine, and the maps are free. I can also get a serial GPS for ~$70 USD. That's all pretty dirt cheap, particularly when compared to the Mapopolis / GPS hardware bundles being sold for ~$200 USD. |

| I just downloaded the trial version of Mapopolis, and I can see why the software is so cheap. There is no audible turn by turn instructions.. just a 2D map, which will probably have a position indicator once a GPS is connected. Not bad though for the price. I'll have to report back if I end up buying a GPS for it. |

I never attempted to get mapolis going on the m130 w/ gps. However, I'm seeing a better option, possibly. The Delorme Earthmate GPS LT-40 is quite cheap, and supports palmos as old as 3.5.
Has anyone attempted to make the Earthmate hardware and software work with the Palm m130? Seems the software should work, but cabling to the GPS is another matter. |

You'd be far better investing in a new device, either a PocketPC or just a dedicated PND for satnav if you wish to retain the Palm. Anything else will be a kludge and ill advised.
