I was driving yesterday night and was about 100meters behind another car, it was some late around the hills. The road was a 30mph road (i think no signs anywhere), the car in front was doing 40mph i was around 35 - 36mph i thought it was 40 as there were no houses but convinced it was 30 after thinking about it.

as i came around a corner there was a sign at the other end, the car was driving up to it and it flashed when the car got close (about 3 meters away i think), the sign said WATCH YOUR SPEED, a very small camera on top, and a digital notice board what i assume shows you the speed limit. Now it looked just like a sign but why did it flash and why does it have a camera on top.

wondering if it flashd me or the other car as the other car was close but i was 100meters away. Have i been had? the sign had two lights build into the top of it above the digital display. Is this a speed camera?

What you saw is what it does. There's some near where I live. It detects your speed and flashed up a reminder if you are over the limit but does not photograph you.

Don't worry, there's no fine in the post. Smile

It detects you as you approach the sign and lights it up.
Some seem to work by detecting your actual speed, but some seem to only detect an approaching vehicle.

Its not a speed camera as such, just a visble reminder

When you say "it flashed when the car got close", do you mean it actually flashed like a GATSO's flash gun, or just lit up?

Perhaps it was a Watchman camera?

As far as I know these cameras aren't live yet. You will get flashed and photographed, but because there is no type approval for them yet you won't get a fine.

whoops sorry it was not a watch man, it looked like a normal sign with lights that flashed when and a camera stuck on top. I am hoping it as someone said and just to warn motorists instead of capping them for speeding.

I read the story that although he got flashed he attacked the camera BEFORE it was confirmed that he would be prosecuted.

As has been stated they are not live yet so the irony is he was jailed for attacking the camera even though the evidence from the camera couldn't be used to convict him of speeding.

There's a couple of those things round my way.

These ones flash a waring telling you to slow down if you're going slightly over the limit but if you're going too fast they show a Camera picture, like the ones on the road signs and then I suspect you get done.
