Hi there
I uploaded a CSV POI file to my Garmin nuvi 300. Now, when I do search for KFC nothing loads up, but when I go to settings I now notice proximity points is displayed which I didn't see there before.
Is there a way the KFCs can be added to the searchable list?
In what folder do the POIs go to in the Nuvi?
Are they converted from CVS files to something else?
Thanks guys
PS - I got the file from a tomtom site recommended here which contains both OV2 and CSV files. |

Looking again I have just found it under custom POIs undermy locations. I'm guessing it's not possible to add them under the food category or searchable database?
Can I rename them on the file KFC?
If I want to reupload the file, do I need to delete the old one?

Yes, they go under Custom POIs, and there is no way to add them into the main categories. Once you get used to that, and load more custom POIs, you may even stop using the built in POIs as they don't offer much useful data.
You can rename and make any changes you want to the original CSV file and then upload it again and the changes will take effect on the Nuvi.
Depending on the version of POI Loader you are using it, it should automatically overwrite all existing POIs with the new set, so keep all the POIs you want to send to the Nuvi in the same directory, and then POI Loader will update them all each time. You do not need to delete the files on the Nuvi if you are using POI Loader. |

Thanks.
So it's best to store all my POIs in one folder on my desktop. So they can all be uploaded each time.
Currently my list just says the locations like "bracknell 256" so should I rename them all KFC for ease of use when having muliple POIs.
Also, the file I downloaded included an image - will these display on the map as I pass any location, or will I get a bong etc??
Lastly, the POIs preinstalled aren't ever affected by the installations of new ones are they - and where is this data from?
Thanks for your help. |

To be honest, I would go to Garmin POI Website and download the wide variety of POI files from there. MaFt (one of the PGPSW Moderators) has done a sterling job of getting these files in a good state for Garmin units, and the file will already include "KFC" within the description of each POI.
Using default settings you will neither see the icon, nor get an alert, although most of the can be changed within POI Loader.
And no, the built in POI are not affected, and come from Navteq. |

and even more fun with the new beta poi loader (2.40) you can have sub-categories within the custom poi's. works great on the nuvi as you get eg:
where to
custom poi
food
mcdonalds
burger king
pizza hut etc
doesn't work too hot on the i3 though
have a play, it's all FREE, FREE I TELLS YA!
ahem...

Firstly thank you so much for this data, it's fantastic.
I like what you descibe with the categories so I downloaded the POI loader from the link on your site.
When I select to upload the unzipped Complete_Sub folder I get the no such data files in that directory.
I appreciate normally you need to place all the CSV folders into one folder and select that one. But in terms of the new categories thing you describe - how is that done?

if you have a folder called 'garmin_poi' then unzip the downloaded folders/files in there.
i.e. so you will have:
garmin_poi/food
garmin_poi/accomodation
garmin_poi/... etc etc
you would then point poi loader to the garmin_poi folder. note, this will ONLY work with the 2.40 beta

Why can't you simply create separate poi categories like food, hotels, etc? And it works with any old Poi loader version. Or am I missing something here? |

i think you're kinda missing the point
at present you can only have:
custom poi's/a
custom poi's/b
custom poi's/c
custom poi's/d
custom poi's/e
custom poi's/f
custom poi's/g
with the beta you can group those into:
custom poi's/group1/a
custom poi's/group1/b
custom poi's/group2/c
custom poi's/group2/d
custom poi's/group3/e
custom poi's/group3/f
custom poi's/group3/g
so if you wish you can just see the categories under group3 without having to scroll through all the other ones

MaFt - although I'm more than able to sort out my own categories, are you planning to provide a version of the GarminPOI file with categories? |
