|

I just got a new Garmin Nuvi 660 and was playing with it and selecting the function that shows 'Food' (or restaurants) near your location. I noticed that a bunch of national chain restaurants were not showing up. Ones that have been there for years. How complete is the mapping and database that comes with the unit?
Does it need to be upgraded to get more restaurants...etc.?
Thanks! |

The POIs built in are provided by Navteq, and are sourced from a number of sources, and isn't great (but then no one else is better). The mapping, however, in the 660 is the latest v9 mapping available from Garmin.
As for improving the database - go to Garmin POI and download some extra files (which will end up in Where To/Extras/Custom POIs) which may offer you a better selection of the national chains you would like to see. |

Swing,
Thanks for the information...my bad on my wording. The mapping looks great and up to date. It is the Points of Interest that I found lacking.
Again, thanks for the tip. |

I too am very disappointed in the Nuvi 660's POIs. I was so disappointed in fact that I attempted to contact Garmin last night:
"I recently purchased the Nuvi 660 and am frankly disappointed in the points of interest included with the software. I own MetroGuide North America v6 for another one of my Garmin devices and it has many more current point of interest as well as more current roads. Funny thing is, this software is 2-years old, while the City Navigator should be the most current. Is there any way to get the POI's from MetroGuide into my Nuvi 660? I have already downloaded your POI Loader."
Their reply (same day!):
"Thank you for contacting Garmin:
The City Navigator V8 NT is going to be the latest version of mapping
software that is currently available and will have the most data. You can
add the Metroguide software to the unit, however the unit will be able to
see the POI's in the mapping but if you try to route to them using this
mapping it will give you incorrect routing.
GARMIN strives to provide customers with the most complete and accurate
mapping that is available to us at a reasonable cost. We use a combination
of governmental and private data sources, which we identify as required by product literature and copyright messages. Virtually all data sources
contain inaccurate or incomplete data to some degree. For this reason, when you find errors within any of our MapSource mapping options, we would appreciate your completing our online Error Report Form so that we can take it to the respective vendor to correct on the next update. I am including the link below to that form for your convenience.
http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/errorForm.html
Our goal is to update the data within this software each 12 to 24 months.
When you supply information via this error report form, we can work with our mapping vendors to address these errors and/or omissions."
I just hope that in the future, their newest version of City Navigator catches up with an old version of MetroGuide. |
