Hi all!

I'm hoping to embark on my first ever Satnav purchase shortly and would be very grateful for some honest and impartial advice before parting with my well-earned cash!!

I don't want anything too sophisticated, though any 'bonus features' would be appreciated.

In short I need something for directions for UK journeys, ideally full postcode search facility with spoken directions if possible; also, something i think is called 'dynamic directions' whereby automatic re-routeing in the event of traffic problems encountered en route, and live traffic reports.

Facility for being advised of safety camera sites (including mobile ones) in advance would also be very useful, also ability to answer 'Bluetooth' mobile phone hands free if possible.

I've seen offers in the press from Halfords for a so-called 'exclusive to Halfords' Garmin C510D Deluxe (including 'for life' live traffic reports and both UK and Europe mapping) for only £199-99 - this also includes pre-downloaded safety camera database

Have also seen in Halfords adverts for a TomTom ONE GB? at around £199-99 too?

Which would be the best of the above please........or is there a better deal on either other products entirely, or from other outlets?

Is Garmin better than TomTom...........or vice versa??

I know I'm asking for a lot for under £200 but the above offers seem to be almost too good to be true!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

TT One doesn't have option for the handsfree calling which seems to be less than ideal anyway.

Most everything else you've specified is pretty standard fare for all PNS.

For info the TT One can be had from Currys (online) for about £167 with following promo code RSAXXX10

Many thanks for your reply Antoeknee!

I'm still not clear though whether the Garmin or the TomTom is the better choice.

The deal with Garmin at Halfords looks pretty competitive, and when I asked them for an honest and impartial opinion over these 2, or indeed any others, they didn't seem to very forthcoming!

Are the features of these 2 models comparable?

With the Garmin you get the RDS TMC receiver so you can get traffic information displayed on the device, the TomTom can also display traffic information but requres a mobile phone with internet access to obtain the data (plus a sunscription fee).
Please be aware that RDS TMC reception within the UK can be "patchy" and dependent upon where you live it may or may not not work reliably, once out on a long trip the unit should be OK, as long as North Scotland isn't the destination - Mike

Get the TomTom ONE, aside from handsfree phone functionality it will do all that you require, has the bets interface and is the easiest to use.
