I apologise if I am in the wrong forum but please forgive me I’m a newcomer.
As I was updating my tomtom go 700 the battery went flat halfway through the installation. When I switched it back on I just got a blank screen. I think the original operating system has been wiped off during the update. I tried to reload the software disk that came with the tomtom. When I tried a fresh installation it didn’t work. My computer recognizes my tomtom as a mass storage unit but has an explanation mark next to it in the device manager. I have sent tomtom 2 e-mails but I have had no response, could you please direct me in the right direction to resolving this problem?

Don't worry, this happens more than you'd think.
Unfortunately TomTom do not put the main software on the CD.
Even worse you can only download the latest software versions from their website via the TomTom 'Home' program, and that doesn't work if it can't recognise your TomTom! Catch-22 eh?

The way round it is to either download the last manually installable version of the software from TomTom (I'll see if I can find the link)
OR you can download various old versions, and the latest v6.52 from Oldboys site HERE

IIRC you need to download the file, unzip it and put the individual files on the root of your SD card (i.e. not in any folder).
Once you've got the system working we can work out if anything else is missing.

I just downloaded the v6.52 from Oldboy's site again to remind me of the install process...
There's a handy text file included (by Oldboy) that says:
Quote:
Copy the 6 Unzipped Files to the Root of the SD Card.

When the GO reboots it will do so 3 times. Just let it cycle till it has finished.

Normal switch on takes only about 4 secs!

Any time the GO is connected to the PC, expect the cyclic reboot on disconnection.

Oldboy.

What a nice man! Smile (even if he does keep beating me to post replies!)

Hi Andy I can’t thank you enough for the reply.
Unfortunately it didn’t work. I don’t have a removable SD card; I think this one has a hard drive. When I tried to copy and paste the files you gave me I just got this error message:
Error copying file or folder
Cannot copy data: cannot find the specified file.
Make sure you specify the correct file and path name

I think my problem is device driver problem, in the device manager there is a explanation mark next to USB mass storage device. I have tried updating the driver but I don’t have a correct driver for it. Before XP use to recognise my TTG. When I go to my computer then right click my TTG and go to properties, it shows 0 bytes in used space and 0 bytes in free space. It won’t let me copy or paste anything onto it. Its just like a blank hard drive.
Thanks again for the help Andy & if you have any more suggestions I would be most grateful
Thanks Peter

Sorry, I'm always guilty of talking about SD cards and then only after I've posted do I notice it's a 700 or 910 that's being talked about. Embarassed Still, the process SHOULD be exactly the same.

As you so rightly say, it now looks like a PC connection problem. Get that sorted out and the above procedures should then be OK.

Trying to think of what you could try...
Have you got a camera with a memory card that you could plug into the same USB port, and see if the PC recognises that?

Anyone else got any ideas?

I did find the download page for the TomTom USB driver for Windows 98:
http://www.tomtom.com/support/index.php?Language=1&query=usb&FID=3134

As you know, Win XP shouldn't need any extra drivers but you could try it (at your own risk! On Fire )

Or I think Win XP has a "repair" option if you run the install disk. Worth a try?

Have you tried resetting the 700 with a pin/ paperclip, some users have reported holding the reset switch in for 30 seconds has recovered / re-booted the unit, if nothing else its worth a try then see if your PC can get at the device over USB - Mike
