Hi all;

Thinking of getting my brother a Garmin i2 for Christmas, and have a few questions;

1) Is the only difference between the i2 and i3 the screen?

2) Is the B&W screen of the i2 any good, especially in direct sunlight?

3) Can the i2 be configured with the speed camera database, and if so, what are the warnings like (i.e. are they useful)?

Thanks for your help. Dave.

Got the i2 a few weeks ago from amazon for £80 (now £90)
The poi databases for the i3 work no problems. The mono screen is absolutely fine...

Also got an i2 a few weeks ago from Amazon (before it went up a tenner) a friend bought an i3 from Carphonewarehouse for £20 extra - mine has v9 maps installed already and a 256MB flash card, his only v8 and no card so he has had problems loading POI's, I don't. The i2 screen is perfectly fine and I'm glad I didn't spend the extra £20.

i2 - khaki-green, so doesn't go with everything....i3 - blue, so is much easier to fit in with almost any wardrobe Smile

Thanks guys - think I will go with the i2 (and the newer map and memory card).

Can anyone tell me how the warnings work with the speed cam database on the i2/i3 - ie are they useful and easy to understand?

On my TT One, I can set the range from POI for the warning on every category, and I get the icon in the top left hand corner (eg '30' in red circle) with a count down of yards to camera. All works very well.

Just wondered how the i2 handles the camera warnings.

If you download Ash's Camera Manager you can set an Alert time, say 30 seconds, and an Overspeed time, say, 10 seconds. Run the downloaded database through it and it'll prepare the files for upload for you.

Then what will happen is you get an initial warning at 30 seconds as long as you are moving but you'll only get the Overspeed warning when you are 10 seconds from the camera. You set different timing for different types of camera.

Personally i prefer his Camera Updater http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=37218&highlight=camera+updater to the Camera Manager http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=43111&highlight=camera+updater

Thanks - the overspeed warnings sound excellent.

The funny thing is, I use my tomtom everyday - not to navigate, but to keep tabs on the latest revenue generators, sorry, speed cameras. Yes I obviously use the nav, but probably only once a week.

This is why I wanted to know how they worked before purchasing one for a Christmas present.

Thanks again.

By default the i3 will only warn you of cameras ONLY if you are speeding but i can't remember the distance or timing they warn you at. The tool above with warn you once even if not speeding.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again - my i3 warns me when I'm approaching a camera whatever speed I'm doing. I just download the Speed Zoned database and install it using POILoader in Express mode and, as far as I'm aware, I haven't changed anything from the default.

I've always used the POILoader database from here and that's how it worked for me, and i believe many others - i.e. it gives you an initial proximity alert but then only continues to warn you if you are speeding.

Sorry, Paul. You said:

which to me means you get no proximity alert unless you are speeding. Obviously I misunderstood. Wink
