I bought my i3 on 23rd July 2006

Less than 4 months later, the unit says (says? , more like nag, nag, nag) its out of date,

emailed Garmin & guess what?

tough...

Garmin say that I have to pay for an update.

very poor customer service.

How long has the device been sat on the shelf? - switch it on and go to Settings/ / Map/ Map Source if it states City Nav Europe NT+ v8 then it is upto date, if it says v7 get in touch with Garmin customer support as the v8 upgrade was free for quite a while.
If you are running v8 maps then that is the most upto date available at the moment, v9 is due out soon but I don't think it can be purchased as an upgrade yet - Mike

This topic has been covered:-

Unless you need Ireland or Eastern European Countries there is no point in upgrading from v8 to v9!

There is nothing wrong with v8, and anyway there is an update usually in Jan/Feb of every year!

I usually update every other year and the one charge is to unlock my two units.
