are there any "stable" programs out there that let you play compressed video files, avi, mpeg etc. on the TomTom One new edition ?

you can use the mplayer from the Makayama package and your own shell script as described in my article.

thanks Lutz, I've read the posts about Makayama and Mobilnova and neither seems to be stable enough to warrant paying for them

will just wait or buy a portable dvd player

The hardware is similar. There is no docking connector for the One though, so you need to do most of the stuff flying blind. I can use the Bluetooth terminal connection but that is not publicly available.
