Hi,

One of my colleagues last week purchased a Navman 3450 GPS bundle and when he showed me it working, I was completely hooked on the idea and now want to purchase a GPS device for myself to use in the car.

However, rather than going for the same device, I have been looking around to try and get some independent reviews.

I have the following requirements and would appreciate if anybody has a bit of time to review them and advise your thoughts on most suitable devices and software:-

Requirements:-

1) I currently have an HP IPAQ 5450 (integral Bluetooth)

2) Don’t want a Sleeve style GPS hardware, I want to use Bluetooth in order not to lock me into the IPAQ model

3) I want good navigation software (3D Views look good on the website)

4) I want Voice Navigation

5) I want to be able to use the GPS navigation software to be able to warn me of Fixed Speed cameras (I guess this is a plug-in to the software)

6) I want the GPS & Software to be around £350 in total

7) Outlook contact integration would be nice but not essential

Thanks in advance for any help.

All current packages satisfy all but one of your conditions. Looks like the only gating factor is #6 - the price... You may have some tough time to find a bluetooth receiver and software for that amount, but then again I have no visibility of the UK market and wouldn't mind to be proven wrong...

TomTom Navigator 2 is around £115 or with a Bluetooth GPS unit around £300.

You may need a memory card to load the maps as well if you don't already have one.

So £350 should be fine.

One small comment is that the 5450 has a quiet speaker. This may affect the choice of mount as there are ones with builtin speakers.

Have a look at http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/viewprod.php?product_id=351

It is my understanding that ONLY TTN2 will integrate with the Pocket GPS World free camera database. I'm fairly new her so perhaps someone could confirm or deny this.

I'm surprised that you don't want bluetooth, getting rid of the wires is so good, but I guess you have a good reason.

FWIW I'm using iPaq 2210 with TTN2 s/w & TT bluetooth GPS, wonderful setup.

I suppose it really depends on personal preference. Personally I love Bluetooth, I'm a gadget freak and anything like this with wireless setup appeals to me (just wish I could get a decent wireless home theater system.

I do like the cabled GPS mouse though, mainly because if you can hide the cables, I don't mind having a square GPS or two (or three or four) Wink sitting on my dashboard.
