Goodbye 530, it was fun!

I'm ditching the 530 after about 6 months use; it's served me pretty well but after a couple of incidents in city centres with it hyper spacing to random roads/directions (due to gps drop out, tall buildings etc.) and poor performance on foot (trouble sensing direction of travel) I've decided to try another manufacturer.
I'm also disappointed that Navman haven't addressed these and other problems by updating software.
I'm just posting here, not as a moan but to let potential customers know of the issues.
Nice hardware shame about the software!

I'll be interested to see how you get on with the new gps you buy & what one you go for.

I used a work TomTom One for a while and in comparison the navman n20 with the 2006 maps that I have made the TomTom look bad.
I don't know if the TomTom had the latest software on it though, but the TomTom's update speed and interface are great.

I drove through the city yesterday with the n20 and can't fault it.

As you say, On foot it seems a bit of a pain with direction of travel but I can live with that.

And don't forget that iCN 530 is an IN-CAR model. If you want to do hiking you might want to go for one of the specialised navigators.

Thanks, not so much hiking just walking around cities.
I'll probably try a Nuvi but it's hard to decide. Will let you know how it works out. Confused

So I'm not alone in being unimpressed with the icn 530. The main reason I'm thinking of ditching it is that there is no feature to tell it to reroute if you know there is a problem ahead. Such as the TomTom roadblock ahead feature.

Well I never thought it was a bad unit but in the end I lost patience with it when I found it was pretty useless when walking in cities. I agree I was always worried about the lack of an avoid road block feature too. I'm not sure if the new models are better but I got the impression navman were not that interested in fixing things, which is a pity as it probably wouldn't be that much work for them in the grand scheme of things.

After playing with a Nuvi in Halfords yet again (3xx series) and not been bowled over by it, I've just ordered a TomTom 910, with the voucher deals available and price drops, it's not so expensive at the moment. Despite it's unfriendly shape it seems to have everything I need (apart from audio socket!).

I'm tempted to keep the 530 as a backup as it's not worth much to sell these days and I must admit it was quite useful for cycle routes around country roads etc. once the waypoints were programmed in.

I'm thinking about ditching my ICN 530 for a Garmin Nuvi 660. I played with a TTG 910 and don't like the fact that all the info is at the bottom of the screen making the street view very narrow - seems to take up at least 1.5cm of the screen.

Nuvi 660 has better layout (info on both sides) and the N60 looks good as well, but I'm after Eastern Euro mapsm which the N60 doesn't have yet (although F20 is indicated with Eastern Euro maps soon).

Well, I'm still very pleased with my iCN530 which I've owned since early summer. Whilst I don't need it every day I haven't had any bad experiences with it yet.

I agree that it can sometimes take a few minutes to get a GPS lock, but as I understand it the N20 is the same GPS chipset so presumably won't be any better. However the N20 is quite a bit cheaper which is nice.

I posted a list of iCN530 pros & cons in the forum a few months ago if anyone's interested. I assume I'll hang on to mine for a few years until the technology has made a big enough leap for me to justify the expense. In the meantime maybe I'll be able to find some secondhand units on Ebay as people upgrade... it would make a good present!

I'm thinking of getting rid of my 530 and thinking about getting a Mio C510 or C710.
The main reason for this is the lack of support from Navman, they just seem to want to keep selling newer models and never fix the bugs / issues. They just ignored the problem I found with navigating to the centre of the place where it would take you someplace miles from where you wanted to be (was not an issue on the 520).

Come on Navman, fix the problems and offer software updates. Don't just keep releasing new models every 6 months.
Mio seem to constantly provide software updates from what I can tell.

Anyone have any experience of the Mio GPS units and can tell me what they are like to navigate with.... too many review sites fail to actually use the GPS to navigate with and spend all the time talking about the software.
