When navigating, the red route has a series of black dots (at least they look like dots) evenly spaced along the route. Do the dots signify anything special?

Not any more. In earlier versions (up to v5) they identified the surveying spots (when the surveyers fixed a location).

Nowadays it's just eye candy.

The dots are white on my colour scheme, but when you zoom in they're not dots - they're arrows pointing in the direction of travel.........
