What exactly is mapsource?

I have an i3 and I assume that mapsource is on the gadget already.

Is it possible to have mapsource on my PC to edit stuff or is this for other products?

Mapsource is the application that you run on your PC, it uses the same Garmin mapping data as your GPS uses as well as allowing you to plot routes, waypoints etc and transfer them to the unit for use on the road. Sort of like Microsoft Autoroute but with the ability to interact with your GPS. Sounds good?

Unfortunately, as far as I know, it can't be used with the mapping that came on the card/in the internal memory on your i3. Additionally the i3 can't do route planning beyond point A to C via B. However, if you have a higher spec Garmin the you can extend the licence to cover two units for free and use the mapping on the PC on your i3, you need to do this via the myGarmin web site. Best to load any additional maps onto a blank TransFlash card. If you have, say, a 2720 with City Navigator Europe v8 then you can load European countries onto a card and use them in your i3 for travel abroad though if you had a 2720 I'd question why you weren't using that.

Mapsource itself is a free download but it's no use without any immediately usable mapping data which costs plenty. Cheaper but needing a bit of fiddling you can use Metroguide Europe, this doesn't offer the ability to route outside Mapsource, however, do a search for a workaround for this that apparently works.
