Are you using Change Preferences | Manage POI | Warn When Near?

yes . when you watch screen while going from a to b would you see a speed limit on it . and does the system tell you if you exceed speed limit. i know that it lets me know if a speed cam is detected. i feel that not everything has been installed onto my tom tom one. the category list should show speed limits 30 40 50 60 70 but does not. it only shows airports restaurants petrol stations etc. i may have to go back to square one from zip file.

Slightly confused by what you are expecting to see...

When you pass a speed camera, the TomTom (with TomTom's own speed cam database or the PGPS one installed) can be set to:
1 ) alert you with a flashing speed limit sign on screen (or another picture if you prefer), and
2 ) give an audible alert (either a built-in sound, or one of several "real-voice" warnings).

The TomTom DOES NOT flash up a speed limit sign to tell you what the speed limit of every road is.

If you have a unit with version 6 software AND the latest maps, then the TomTom can be set up to show you (in small red numbers) the speed you are doing and the speed limit for that road. These will flash if you go over the limit.
However, it is early days for this feature, and MANY roads do not have the speed information coded into the map (or worse, they have the wrong speed!).

Does this clarify what you are after?

How do I make it do that? Can't see no options for showing speed limits or have I missed something?

My App version is 6.501

Do you have the latest maps, i.e. do you have a TomTom x10 unit or TomTom Navigator 6?

Yes, I guess I must have as I've just bought a TomTom One New Edition and it came with TeleAtlas GB maps v660.1199.
