I hope this is the right place to post this - a friend has the original TomTom bluetooth GPS and its battery is worn out. Can it be replaced and if so, where can he get one?

I'm seeing ads for new third party bt gps units for as low as £20, so I'm kind of guessing that it may not be worth replacing the battery on the old unit I see there is a solar powered unit being advertised for around £35 - seems like a good idea.

Any comments most welcomed.

Thanks,

Ian

Ian, to be honest at the price of the new hardware and the associated performance increase you get I would go with a new device, make sure you get a SiRF-III GPS unit to replace the dead one, slightly more costly. But well worth the extra outlay in the longer term.

Replacement of batteries is fine if the manufacturer gives you the option to swap out the rechargable cell, if not its a return to vendor/ repair shop or hacking the unit apart and soldering a new cell into place, get it wrong and you could have a fire - is it worth the risk for a few £ - Mike
