|
|
Hello all,
I have a rather old Garmin V that I bought as the deluxe kit. It came with version 5.02 of City Select NA. Last night when I went to reinstall the program on a new computer, I got a failure message that it could not read a file in C:/GARMIN/NACSV5/000664533.img Upon looking at the disc I found a rather deep scratch that I believe is causing the problem, as when I try to copy each file to a new folder one file, DATA1.cab will not copy. Since my unit is over 3 years old, there is no warranty, and I cannot afford to purchase the newest version (over $100). The scratch is not to the point that it 'through' to the other side and I heard you can sometimes fix a scratch to make it readable again. Has anyone has success doing this and if yes, what did you use?
The other option is to find someone who has this older version and get a copy of the file DATA1.cab (e.g. upload it to yousendit.com). I am NOT asking for any code (I have my original 25 digit one), only for the single file so I can create a new disc.
Thanks in advance for anyone's help.
Frank

Hi Frank to the forum.
Have you tried contacting Garmin on this? Appreciate you saying your unit is out of warranty, but trying costs little and Garmin tend to be very heplful.
I expect they'd ask you to send the damaged disk in for replacement. _________________ Garmin i3 gone (sold on eBay)

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did. They were the ones who said V5 was very old and that I would need to get V8 (on DVD, they no longer have it on CD). I guess I can try again -- sometimes you get different answers from different people...
Have a nice week. |

there are companies out there that say they should be able to sort out your disc. I saw an advert in Toys r us. I think it was around £5. I think they polish it out by taking a thin layer off which takes away the scratches
I hope this helps _________________ i3 2.70(went to 2.82,3.0,3.1 but downgraded) with V8 map on microSD card

Apologies, Frank
I didn't appreciate that your maps were so old. Thought Garmin might still be able to replace what you had. I guess US mapping is at v8, with v9 imminent like Europe.
Bill's right though, there are a number of solutions out there that may help your scratch issue. Try googling 'cd repair kit' and see what you get locally.
Here in the UK I get multiple hits, most of which point to 'skimming' products which, as Bill says, take a thin layer off, thus improving or eradicating the scratch. _________________ Garmin i3 gone (sold on eBay)
