been through a fair few satnavs recently, trying to get the best results for handsfree calling, recently purchased a tomtom 510 , not happy with the results, or the machine (crap mics, looses settings etc etc)

anyway on to the main question.

i can take my tomtom 510 back for a refund no problem, and with tomtom 6 just released, it says and i quote

"Call handling options

Easy call handling: On-screen instructions remain visible while making phonecalls or receiving SMS messages. "

this is taken from the PDA review on there site.

Does this mean that if i purchase a pda with bluetooth that it will connect to my phone and handle the calls via bluetooth?

thanks

i mean with tomtom6 installed on the pda, wil it handle the calls via bluetooth and act as a handsfree whilst still navigating (like the 510 does)

But why would anyone purchase a PDA with no phone/wireless connectivity?

Doubt that you will be able to use your PDA as a hands free.

However you could try what I have, which is a combined PDA and phone running Windows PPC and TTN5. I have an Ipaq 6340 but there are others about. I am using a Parrot CK3300 combined BT sat nav receiver and car phone kit along with a Brodit mount that keeps the Ipaq charged.

This means that I use the one unit as phone, PDA and sat nav. Saves me having to carry 3 things about and I don't have the tell tale TT mount in the car as an invite to thieves.

Also with the Parrot kit it all works together and is integrated into my car's audio system.

So I can have the sat nav on all of the time and any instructions or warnings come through the car audio system (which mutes or switches on automatically as needed). When I get a phone call (or make one) the sat nav system also mutes, but the map stays on the screen (once I have answered/dialled) so that I can still see directions etc while I am talking handsfree through the car audio. This also means I can use the car audio volume control to adjust volume of sat nav and calls, even the one on the steering wheel.

All of this I can do with TT5. I will wait for all the bugs to be ironed out of TT6 before I think of upgrading.

A great system which, because of some good deals at the time cost not a lot more than the combined cost of a new Tom Tom and installing my car kit for my old phone into my new car, and let me have a proper built in system and a non-contract, unlocked phone and PDA.

If you can get a compatable PDA free (or cheap) with your mobile phone contract the parrot kit is now less than £200 installed. Add the TT software and a Brodit mount and it will still be cheaper than a TT910.

The main disadavantage is that as a sat nav system it is not very mobile - I can only use it my car - unless I get a separate BT receiver. However that does not worry me too much because the wife has a TTG700, which I can "borrow" when I am away using a hire car.

Er, how are you getting the tomtom voices directed through your parrot kit? I have a ck3000, but when tomtom tells me to turn it does go through the parrot.

The only way i see it is to have the feed from the phone constantly go to the parrot. I can't see how you can get it to just divert the voice and then switch the output off.

if you catch my drift?
