TomTom Have just announced the long awaited launch of TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 for PDA and smartphones.
Building on the success of previous Navigator releases, Version 6 adds a number of new features including:
Buddies: This service allows authorised users to locate one another and send instant messages.
Arrival Time Planning: Plan a route based on your desired time of arrival.
Speed Alert: This notifies the driver when he/she exceeds the speed limit in force on that stretch of road.
Safety Lock: This disables menu items to ensure the driver is not distracted.
TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 will be available from September 2006. It is available as a stand alone software product or bundled together with a PDA or smart phone through retailers. TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 with navigation software and the maps of a country/region plus major roads of Western Europe on memory card, will cost 99.
Additional TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 features:
Simple installation and easy-to-use menu
Improved User Interface: with night view and 65,000 colours for optimal visibility.
Clear 2D or 3D maps and accurate turn-by-turn spoken instructions
Choice of routes: quickest, shortest, by foot, avoiding toll roads and more
Instant re-routing if you miss your turn
Easy call handling: navigate while receiving phone calls
Itinerary planning: programme in the schedule of places you want to visit before you leave the house
Multilingual: TomTom NAVIGATOR speaks some 22 languages in over 50 different voices
PLUS services offer Traffic, Safety Cameras, Points of Interest and much more
We do not as yet have information on the upgrade procedure for existing v5 owners but will post this information as soon as we have it. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Of course for all of us who have v5 the upgrade offer is the real news. We will of course post details as and when we receive them.
For me having evaluated v6 for some time now it's the small things such as speed alert and the new maps that clearly show whether a route is over or under a bridge etc that I like. Buddies could be useful in some markets as well. _________________ Darren Griffin |

In the rush to get the announcement out I'd missed that! I'm now wondering if the lack of any upgrade info means there isn't and it will be a flat rate 99 for new users and upgraders alike? _________________ Darren Griffin |

They're still saying in their support site that "Introducing a new map update program. Starting in the beginning of the third quarter of 2006, existing TomTom customers will be able to purchase the latest maps at a discount. Each map package also includes free updates to the TomTom software." _________________ tomtom 940 live/tt active dock holder/tt rds-tmc traffic receiver usb |

Hi
I don't suppose you know if the long awaited maps of Northern and Southern Ireland are included?

should be the same coverage as the maps on the x10 units which although better than before still isnt great especially down south.
The euro ones using navteq maps though and there irish coverage is miles better.

The upgrade from v3 to v5 was quite cheap. Cannot remember the actual figure but we did get maps of Europe. It will probably be similar this time because if it's not then a lot of people will not upgrade. |

The cost of upgrading from TomTom Navigator 3 to Navigator 5 was 59.00 plus 9.95 post and packing. The total cost was 68.95, which when converted (including commission) equated to £47.51 on my credit card bill. The upgrade from TTNav 3 to 5 also upgraded a single European country (i.e. UK) to Maps of Western Europe.

I suspect that TomTom will keep with Tele Atlas maps, at least for single countries. Tele Atlas has now mapped the whole of Ireland, including Eire. If that is indeed TomToms plan (I have no inside knowledge) then TomTom would be extremely silly not to include the latest Tele Atlas maps and thus Eire too.

I've read rumors that TT will now focus only on the PND market. |
