I've had mine about 7 weeks now - only used it about 5 times. Gave it a full charge yesterday as my wife was going to be using it today - the bloody thing only lasted just over 2 hours before conking out at a cruicial point on her journey - she had to stop in a bit of a dodgy looking area to set up the power cord before she could continue. Is it because I haven't fully conditioned the battery by so little use or by failing to charge/discharge it or is this about normal? How about setting it up so that the backlight goes out - does it come back on when an alert or direction comes up? Any tips/ideas? How long does yours last on a full charge? And be honest! Question

Don't know. Whenever I use it in the car, it is always on the power lead. Seems daft not to really.

Do you? Even for journeys of 1 - 2 hours? Now that seems daft to me. It's a wonder they include a battery with them then, isn't it? Rolling Eyes Do you keep your mobile phone plugged in as well? Confused

No, really, I just cand stand the cable hanging all over the dash and getting caught on the gearlever and for a journey of 2.5 hours, you would expect something that CLAIMS to have 4 - 8 hours battery life to do the job. If the claims are true. That doesn't seem daft to me and thats why I asked.

I use it for journeys of less than 1/2 hour! The power lead tends to remain plugged in to my cradle, so yes if the unit is plugged in to the cradle it will be on supplementary power.

To save on battery useage, Garmin recommend turning the screen backlight off - but this can make the screen difficult to read in bright conditions. As far as I see you have two solutions to this problem. Leave the backlight on permanently, thus reducing your battery life, or run it off auxiliary power.

Pitstop, I have TMC so have to run on power cable.
The power cable plugs into the cradle so never needs to be unplugged.
So surely you can route the cable in a permanet kind of way so it does not flap around!
My wife uses the GPs at odd time so a second cable is routed in her car, easy peasy!
Re Battery life, my techie friend insists for re chargeable batteries they need to be kept charging nearly every day. Some have a "memory like syndrom" where if partially charged they never reach full efficiency.
My nuvi running on battery has lasted over 4 hours in a friends car navigating and has lasted two days being used on foot being used on and off.
When using TMC the TMC cable has to be plugged in and is not a problem, so I can't really see you problem with the cable.
As for mobile phone, mine is kept on charge in the car and when at home on the desk. Ive only had three mobiles and all have never gone wrong and batteries worked for days at odd times when they could not be kept on charge.
