getting new buttons

I assume you have soft rebootedt the device after changing the schema.ini file? Soft reboot using the paperclip in the hole method, not the sliding on/off switch which will of course cause a hard reset to factory defaults.
If you have changed the references to which button graphics to use, then these changes should be shown immediately after a soft reboot Why don't you try swapping the graphics fro the media payer and the picture viwer over as an experiment to see how that works? If you only change the names of the graphics to use, the buttons should change but the original functions should stay the same.
As to getting more buttons on the shell - you can get as many as you like, limited only by how big your fingers are! The smaller the graphic, the more fiddly. I have just two extra big buttons on my device - located either side of the tools button. I use three more tiny buttons to run other utilities - these can be tiny as I don't need to use them while on the move in the car.
Get playing around with the schema settings, move the buttons around a bit (try 10 pixels at a time to see how it works etc.). Once you have played with the schema.ini settings for a while, it should be pretty easy to see how it all works.
