Garmin SP2610 and POIs - Help

Greetings!! I think you all may be just what I am looking for now that I have a new GPS. I have tried to read as many posts as possible and I do not see anything that clarifies what is possible for adding POIs onto my 2610. It appears my unit does not support adding any additional POIs besides what is preloaded. I guess I have 2 questions:

1) Is that correct that I cannot update the existing POIs?
2) There are so may POI files available for downloading, is there some way I can convert the POI data into a Waypoint that I could then download and have available on the unit?

Garmin in their wisdom (or lack of) seems to have no way to update or make more current the POI data.......... Thanks in advance for any assistance!!
