I was playing with a 310D in Halfords a few weeks ago and the "shift" key on the alphanumeric input screens cycled through A-Z, numbers, assorted special characters *and* accented characters for Europe.

Just playing with a 350 in Comet and it only had A-Z, numbers and the assorted special characters.

Seems odd to me that what would appear to be a higher spec box has less features. Or am I missing something? It has been known :-)

All the Nuvi devices share a very common software codebase (although the different products have different software version numbers). Neither unit will have been updated since the stock arrived at the shops, so I suspect it's simply that the 350 has an earlier pre-installed software.

For example, you can also install and add different vehicle icons to appear on the screen - this is out of the box functionality on the 310/360, but needs a software update on the 300/350 to achieve, so comparing them in Halfords - again the 310 looks better.

In fact, a quick check of the Garmin software updates makes me think both features came together in the latest stable software release, which would explain the situation. I think Garmin ship their units with the latest available at the time of shipping (from Garmin), so the 350 won't be wildly out of date, but it would appear in this case it's a month or so earlier than the 310 down the road.

I see - That makes sense.

Thanks.

Actually I think you will find that the 310 is a higher spec than the 350 in the same way that the 360 is. The only difference between the 310 and the 360 is that the 360 includes European maps whereas the 310 only comes with UK mapping.

I don't understand your "the 310 is a higher spec than the 350 in the same way that the 360 is" - there are 4 models (plus 1 special edition):

300 - UK only maps
310 - UK only maps, plus Bluetooth
350 - European maps and Text to Speech
360 - European maps and Text to Speech, plus Bluetooth

310D - UK only maps (built in), plus Bluetooth. Traffic module and European maps on DVD (to install to an SD card) also in box.

So, the 310 is a lower spec than the 350, although it does have Bluetooth.
