Hi,
I own a Tom Tom ONE, in genral I have been happy with it.
However on a recent trip to Edinburgh Castle Tom Tom took me to the exact location of the castle which was great but then I had to find myself a Car Park.
Has anyone made a POI of the car parks because the tom tom stored one is very poor and incomplete. |

I second that - although it might be hard for somone to get that information since a lot of carparks are council run & independent therefore there's no central database of them.
I was trying to get a list of NT carparks (because I can park free in them) but they give their list in GB map coordintes and none of the POI editors accept those.. so it's a right pain in the arse converting and I haven't been bothered. |

Have a look at something like:

if it is not suitable, no doubt there will be other similar programs. |

I think that the only way to get a comprehensive POI would be for people to do their local area, then combine the data.
I tried to find carpark websites for my area (Cornwall). Each District Council lists their carparks, but there are many private ones which aren't listed anywhere.
Maybe if we got enough people to join in, we could create a comprehensive POI, using personal local knowledge? It might be a good idea to do "regional" POIs, rather than a National one, otherwise it'd be a very large file.
I'm up for doing West Cornwall. |

I can see this being a nightmare. Especially since (for navigation puropses) the 'correct' location for the car park is not the car park itself, but the point where you leave the highway to enter the car park (or to join an access road if this is not mapped). This is fine for car parks with a single entrance, but you really start having problems when there are several (sometimes in different streets). That is before we start thinking about dedicated entrances and exits! Good luck (I think you might need it)
I have also noticed that the disabled, or coach parking can be in a totally different car park rather than dedicated spaces, and that for some large places, you can use a different car park depending upon the direction you have come from. |

You're spot on about the locations - entrances is the only way to do it. That's why local knowledge is essential - "dead reckoning" on a map to get the co-ordinates. |

Hi guys,
there is a website called poidownload.co.uk that may be able to give you what you are looking for. There is a category on there called car parking and garaging. It could be worthwhile downloading it to see what it is like. _________________ chauf4

I've had a quick look at their file, and as I suspected it isn't of any use whatsoever for the problems described in this post - it only contains 417 entries with nearly a third being NCP - hardly comprehensive. I wouldn't be suprised if many of the locations aren't already included with the major satnavs already.
What people are looking for is to have the ability to be directed to a suitable car park, rather than just to the front door of their destination, along with details of the smaller, but just as useful local car parks. Which makes me think that parking should be split by price (ie free, reasonable charge, and robbery). |
