Hi

I've been using Google Earth to record paths (tracks) and then converting them to Garmin files for use on my 60C. Does anyone know of a way I can convert these paths to Garmin routes instead? Or, is there a way to convert tracks to routes on the Garmin?

Thanks
Brett

Garmin MapSource has these possiblities.
You need a PC/Laptop, Free updated MapSource software, CitySelect/CityNavigator/MetroGide.

Any track from my 'units' can be downloaded to the PC, converted to a route and depending on the unit loaded onto the unit.

All tracks and routes are available to view from Mapsource direct onto Google Earth

Open Mapsource.
Load the track you have saved.
Use the MapSource 'Route Tool' and click on the first track point on the map view.

Then click on the subsequent track points [perhaps 1 in 20 of the points] but specifically where an option [direction change] may occur!

Each time you click on a track point the pink/purple route line is extended!

You can select parts of a track and make several different routes!

Getting the route into the unit is dependent on the model, but in my case it is so easy to transfer to the 60CSx.

Any help??

Having tracks from around Ireland from my Summer Holiday, I have created routes [eliminating detours and pedestrian viewing] to save for a future return to the area!!

All these tracks and routes are available to view in Google Earth direct from MapSource.

Thanks Strumble. That is the only way I see it can be done. Unfortunately my tracks are thousands of kms long and I don't want to spend days overlaying a route. I figure there must be a simple way to rewrite a track code, or convert the file.

cheers

Just taken 5 minutes to create a route from a track from a campsite in Switzerland to the French Port of Calais with an overnight stop![960km]

If you are following a major road then the 'Route tool' is only selecting the track points at directional changes [could be 300km between] or at your forced toilet or fuel stops!

My idea of 1 in 20 selection of track points was for complicated routes in cities or as a pedestrian, you did not mention 'thousands of kms long' which make it easier/quicker, not more complicated!

Have a look at my POIConverter program ( version 3.18 ) http://rjdavies.users.btopenworld.com/html/poiconverter.html it will convert track data to route data.

1. Run the program Smile
2. Use the Option menu to set the Track Filter to 10
3. Click on the [Track data] button
4. Open a file containing Track data, eg track.gpx
5. Click on the [Route data] button
6. Save the route data to a file, eg route.gpx
7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 or Exit

Richard

Edited to fix link.

Sorry about that Embarassed For some reason the file was not transferred to the website. It looks as though I had exceeded my disk quota on the server although it did not report an error.
