nuvi 310 - getting the unit to 'unlock maps'

Woderful bit of kit but got a little confused when I bought this as I thought I could use this in Spain. I've got a copy of City Navigator v8 with unlock code and I thought I could just put the spanish maps on and away I go
Problem I've got now is when ever I turn the unit on It says 'Can't unlock maps' even though I think I've taken the spanish regions off (UK mapping works fine though)
The other problem is how to get the Spanish maps on.

Thinking of trying to sell this locally for £280ish and getting the 310D online for £330 or even the one from halfords for £399 with the TMC.

Any ideas/help ?
