|
|
I received a call today from a friend in the motoring industry informing me that several people have mentioned to him about receiving speeding tickets on the M27 and that the S.P.E.C.S cameras are now on and enforcing the National Speed Limit on the motorway (70mph). This is the first I have heard of it, and cannot find anything to substantiate the claim, but if people have started receiving fines and endorsements through the post, this doesn't sound good.
Although the M27 cameras are S.P.E.C.S they have never been used in enforcing traffic speeds, more the traffic flow/management, but we do have some of the cameras listed in our database, and until I hear further I'd urge people to check their speed along the M27 (just in case!)

Dave
Do you know what the deal is with regard to the camera signs and the law? I went down the M27 yesterday and didn't see any SC signs.
Cheers |

The law as I understand it with S.P.E.C.S is that they need to have the Specs symbol next to the cameras. Some counties paint them yellow, some don't though. |

Can you use that as a defence (i.e. no signs) if you receive a NIP in the post? |

You could try, but from my recollection I believe someone already tried that, and the magistrate came back with "But you were travelling illegally above the speed limit, speeding!"
It maybe wrong for lack of signs, or hidden signs, but nothing detracts from the main point is that you were breaking the law whether it was intentional or not, lack of signs shouldn't make a difference unless there were no speed limit signs along that segment of road for several miles and the limit was below what it should usually be for a road of that category. |

Please note, Hampshire Police have an update on their website from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Safety Camera Partnership that says this is a hoax, just like the M4 hoax.
Following false information circulated to local media, Marion Sinclair, Manager of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Safety Camera Partnership, said today:
"I can confirm that we do not have SPECS cameras on the M27, or anywhere else in Hampshire or the Isle of Wight for that matter. Nor do we have any plans at this time to install any.
“There was a similar rumour about the M4 earlier this week which caused utter chaos, so it seems as if this is part two of an elaborate hoax.”

There are 3 cameras shown in the db which look like specs type cameras. In view of Hants statement
"I can confirm that we do not have SPECS cameras on the M27, or anywhere else in Hampshire or the Isle of Wight for that matter. Nor do we have any plans at this time to install any.
is it safe to delete these ? |

You can remove them, we will remove them from the database in the near future, same goes for the M3 cameras, these historically have been marker test cameras for us. |

Thanks Dave -- can you (or anyone) confirm the camera numbers of those marker ones (the M3) and the spurious SPECS cameras on the M27? Then I can check I'm deleting the right ones!
Thanks

These seem to have reappeared as SPECS:4A, 4B & 4C. Should they still be ignored? |

Yes, we will have these removed (again!) in the next update. Apologies for the confusion! _________________ Darren Griffin |
