i3 software crashes

Bought my i3 from comet with software 3.00 on it and it worked fine on the test run from portsmouth to bracknell (70-80 miles) without a problem.

Then I upgraded to 3.10 and downloaded some POI's to it.
I went to the SL6 3SH area which is about 15 minutes drive at it would crash and turn off at least twice each way going there and back.
Tried downgrading to 3.00 and it did exactly the same and even crashing at the same point.
Strangely later I went from bracknell to oxford and back (45 minutes each way ish) and it did not crash once.

It seems to be specific areas it does not like. Could perhaps be the maps itself or the POI's I loaded?
I have a card reader on order from 7dayshop so when that arrives I can try it without the POI's loaded.

If it does turn out not to be the POI's I believe software 2.7 is regarded as being the most stable?
What features will I loose if I downgrade to this?
