Hello. I am at a loss to figure out what is happening here, i hope someone can help.
I bought a Streetpilot III from e-bay and it's a great unit. It came with the City Navigator Europe V4.01 CDROM and the maps work perfectly, both on the PC and on the StreetPilot III. However, i did notice a few shopping centres / roundabouts etc which were not on it (I think the maps on it are around 3 to 4 years old). So i thought i would upgrade to City Navigator Version 8 (V8) which has maps up to date as of Jan 2006. So i bought the City Nav V8 CD off e-bay (an original !!) and firstly installed it on my PC. It installed okay, and i entered the code i was given to unlock the maps for the area where i live. All went okay and i could see the unlocked maps on my PC.
I then downloaded the maps onto the 128Mb Garmin Data Card using the USB programmer and it said the maps were stored on the card successfully. I switched the StreetPilot III on and it came up with "Can't Unlock Maps". I then re-installed Version 4.01 back on and that worked okay. Then re-installed Version 8 and again, it says "Can't Unlock Maps".
Please help as i paid £40 for this original and cannot get it to work !.
Is it perhaps because the software on my StreetPilot III is 2.40 (and you can get a free upgrade to 2.80 from the Garmin Website). Although i didn't really want to tinker with the upgrade from 2.40 to 2.80 as my unit is working fine at the moment (by the way, does the upgrade go smoothly ???) !.
Any help would be much appreciated. As i say the City Navigator V8 CD did come with a serial key (quite a long one, about 25 charecters or so), but do i need a key to match the CD with my Unit or something ?
Any ideas where i might be going wrong here ??
Kind Regards,
Andrew |

The unlock codes are unit specific!
You must unlock the maps by visiting Garmin and use your Unit ID and the long code you say was supplied. Use MapSource to unlock the software online.
Only two units can unlock the DVDCityNavigator Europe v8.
Regularly, eBay sells 'an original copy' of Garmin disks or even worse the 'update disk' that are worthless as the unlock codes can only be used twice. The number on the back of the DVD is not significant! |

oh thanks for that !. yeah, the CD does look original (no case, but the picture print on the CD does look genuine). However, the code he gave me was written on a piece of paper, so i hope it's genuine too !. I'm 90% certain that it's a genuine code (the seller has 1041 feedback and 100%), but on the off-chance it is NOT genuine and i visit the Garmin Website to enter it, what would happen ??? !!! ???
Kind Regards,

You would find that more than two units have already been unlocked so you would have wasted money!
I have sent you a PM. |

oh no, i hope not !. i'll have to have a go with it when i get home as i'm at work at the moment. i sincerely hope that i haven't wasted the £37.99 i paid for it !! - is there any other way round this if it were to be the case that it wasn't a genuine serial key ? (apart from giving him negative feedback on ebay !!)
Kind Regards,

Well i sent the 25 figure code to Garmin and they sent me a 6 digit code. My City Nav V8 now has this 6 figure code in it (when you view unlock information), however when i download the maps to my Streetpilot 3, it still says "Can't unlock maps" !! - i'm fed up of trying now, what a waste of money !, might try and find a serial on the net (it's not as if i haven't already PAID for the software once already !!!!)
Cheers

Andrew,
It might be worth creating an account at www.garmin.com and seeing if the number Garmin have sent you is valid. Searching the 'net for a Serial Number won't help as the serial number needs to be for your device, not just any old one.
Unfortunately, you may have bought the goods but they might not be legitimate. And £38 for CityNavigator V8 is extremely cheap for a £200+ product. I suggest you ask for your money back. _________________ Tim |

One of the options within MapSource is 'Get Unit ID'.
It does it for you.
The 6 digit code is your start of the online procedure, not the end of it.
If the software is illegal then you have not paid for it, you have just parted with cash! |

Anybody help me here please. I have been given a street pilot III. However, as it did not have a usb data progammer cable to upgrade via mapsource data card I bought one off ebay. I now wish to look to upgrade to a more up todate city navigator as the one I have is European City Navigator Version 5. I believe there is a 2008 version available. Problem is I have the 25 digit unlock code but not the 6 digit code. I have emailed garmin.... any solutions here as I belive you need this 6 figure code to upgrade. As a standlone is no good is this correct? |
