Hi all

As subject

Anyone know how much it costs to use the TomTom Traffic service

How often does it connect, How much data does it download.

My Mobile provider chargers £4 per MB, I don't want to sign up if it turns out to be too expensive to run.

I did check the TomTom site but they have no indication of running costs.

Thanks

How much is too much?

You get to choose how often it checks. Default is once every 15 minutes which costs about three pence each time on my Virgin PAYG account. I am still in my trial and only switch it on when I need it it. For example, I had it check once when planning a jounrney before leaving, and then again every 15 minutes whilst approaching London late on a Sunday afternoon when there was a risk of the usual M25 Sunday evening terrors.

I am not sure what to is meant to do however as whilst it has found queues etc, it has never indicated delays to me whilst driving and has never rerouted. It is very frustrating sitting in stationary traffic whilst the screen indicates nothing, but when you look at the traffic map it tells you there is a queue. Why was than not indicated before? I would have rerouted knowing the area well if TT had bothered to tell me. I have never seen anything appear in the bar at the side even whe nthe map shows incidents on my route.

It's not too expensive to run, and as julianbarker said you can limit the frequency of updates. You can use it for free for a month and see how much it would cost you. The problem is that it is not reliable and it might save you from being stuck in a traffic jam today and make you do a 20 miles detour for no reason tomorrow.

Thanks for the reply lads

Sounds like a Trafficmaster unit and subs may be a better and cheaper option.

Thanks

I used Traffic for 2 hours a day, on a 15 min update, and used 16MB in a month. That worked our far too expensive in call charges, so I stopped using it, even though I've paid Tom Tom for a year.

And just to rub it in. I see Navman are offering their TMC service Free of Charge to their UK Customers.

RDS-TMS requires a decent FM antenna to operate reliably and just adds to the complexity of the installation, so I don't think that it is a better option.

It's a curious view, but I believe it is fairly common in the general population.Laughing Alas, TMC in the UK is not exactly free.

The Question was about TMC.

What has that got to do with walking?

With the new x10 units, the TMC adapter will cost you money, but after that it is free, it is just a radio receiver.

the way tmc works at the minute you buy the receiver, included in the cost of the receiver is the license to receive tmc data. AFIAK the is no anual subsription for this type of device unlike the current gprs setup which requirs a yearly licence. i have to admit being a gprs user id like to see a lifetime subcription for traffic instaead of the current xxx euros per year
