Hi,

my friend has given me his 2 week old TomTom one as a gift (which he has used only twice) but had given all of his details when buying it. i want to know if i can get the warranty transferred to my name.

my friend has not used the CD provided to register his product online. he just used it buying switching it on. does the warranty get activated through this CD registration? can i put my details and register it so that i can use the remainder of the warranty period?

many thanks

In theory the software licence with TT is non-transferable. Whether they would be able to enforce such a provision is another matter - I suspect the Unfair Consumer Regulations may stop them, but not sure.

Make sure your (very generous) friend has given you the Product Code Card with the code for your unit on it otherwise you will have problems registering with TT. If you have that then you could give it a go and see what happens

With that quick of turn-around time (just two weeks), you could tell them that it was bought for you as a gift while the buyer was on holiday, they tried it out to make sure it would work okay for you, but now they've given it to you as a gift as he originally intended. TomTom has been fairly reasonable with me and my fairly constant Palm device changes (kept having to change the access code on TomTom Nav 5 Palm software), but I never tried to change ownership name.

I would think they would be more likely to transfer ownership of a hardware product like the TomTom GO line than they would their software only line. They can't expect people not to resell a TomTom GO eventually. Not everyone is going to keep it until it dies. I would advise getting your story very straight and simple though. If they suspect any foul play (like the unit is stolen), they'll probably deny your request. Also keep in mind (not that I'm accusing you or anything) that if the unit is stolen, they probably know about it as it's probably been reported.

When I tried to register it, it never asked me for any details at all.

Actually, same thing with me -- it accepted my registration without anything but the code on the included card. If you have that, you should be fine.
