My Go710 has just arrived, minus the free remote :-(. Now to start having a play and see how all the basics work. First job take a back up, just in case, that I have picked up load and clear from this site. Please bear with me as I may ask some silly questions, as this is my first sat nav.

Oh well here goes...........

In addition to backups (I have two originals - one straight copy from the SD card to a folder on my computer, the other a backup done through TT Home) another good idea (for those who can afford it) is to get another SD card (I got a 2GB one), copy everything to that and use the copy, saving the original SD card untouched, unaltered with the family jewels.

To use a backup card, is it literally just a matter of copying all files from the oriiinal card to the new one and it will work?

That's the way it worked for me - falling off a log, easy peasy. Just make sure with Win Explorer you can see all files and extensions before you start.

Why do you guys get different sd cards?

How big is the card in my One v2?

Last one.....

IF I can get my PC to recognize my TT again should I make a second back up NOT using the TT Software? How?

We don't get "different" SD cards, we get additional ones (sometimes bigger too in order to accommodate additions to the stuff on them) in order to use them instead of the original and to keep the original pristine, shiny, untouched as guarantee against the day when everything goes pear-shaped (we just slip the original in and say abracadabra and it all works again). Laughing

IF you can get your PC to recognise your TT again, when TT Home starts up, ignore it and fire up Windows Explorer. Then right click on the Drive entitled Tom Tom and choose "Properties", one of which is how big it is and how much is used and how much is free (unused). If you have a card reader on your PC, you can get there quicker by simply putting your SD card into the reader.

Whilst there (and in Win Explorer - that's Windows Explorer, NOT Internet Explorer), you do a second backup not using the TT Software by
1. Create a new Folder on your computer (e.g. TomTomTuesday2007Jan09).
2. Go back to the Tom Tom Drive and ensure it is showing all folders, files and extensions (Tools, Folder Options, View - tick Show Hidden Files and Folders, untick Hide Extensions for Known File Types, untick Hide Protected Operating System Files.
3. Right click on the drive, then select Copy.
4. Right click on the new folder you created in 1. above and select Paste.

All your Tom Tom contents will be copied into that folder. Isn't new technology wonderful? Laughing

Dennis you Rock!

Thanks bud....

The card is one Gig? Wow.....

So I would need to buy at least that size but probably a 2 gig to make it worth while I guess. Is this a recommended procedure?

I have 28 meg left. Is that enough to install some cameras for now?

The 28 Meg is more than enough for the pgpsw cameras.

But I go for a 2Gig card because someone once told me the TomTom uses the card for swap file just like your PC. Plus extra space for any extras you may care to fit on there. I can't imagine what folk would like to store there as I only have the cameras, but they do something I suppose. By the way, some people discuss card type at length, particularly speed, saying faster is better. I haven't the faintest idea what they're talking about - I just went and got the first I found (40 quid a throw!). Ignorance and old age must serve me well, because I've not had any trouble - I've no idea how fast my cards are!

Bonne Chance!
Dennis

Thanks Dennis.

I copied the silent voice into my voices folder and yet it it not on my one v2.

Is it not compatible or am I just a turd?

I got the 24 separate camera files to work.....now on to the voices Twisted Evil

Any advice on this as well?

Are you sure you're new at this - you look to be doing pretty well to me!
I dunno why you'd want to use the silent voice (the reason I use it is I have two satnavs and got fed up with the pair of them doing the back seat driver business).

Anyway, you should have copied three files into the Voices folder. In my case I downloaded Ray's (bless that guy!) silent voice which unzipped into three files ..
data99.bmp
data99.chk
data99.vif

After I copied these into my voices folder I was able to select the voice - I thought I wasn't getting there, but it showed eventually - I had to go past all the earlier numbered ones until I got to 99.
