I purchased a C510D last Friday from Halfords for £300. I went for this over the Tom Tom that has more features because it has “real time traffic” and I feel that is a major benefit. Well no one like getting stuck in traffic…

Anyway after a short test drive I connected the C510D to my computer and;

1) Registered the product
2) Made a Web updated to version 2.4
3) Loaded POI (including safety cameras)
4) Every thing was fine

Next day I went on a trip from Stroud to Bedford using the “shortest route”. It was a superb drive on a sunny morning through the Cotswolds. Even the real time traffic kicked in to take me round a gridlocked town! The only criticism was that the ETA was a little over optimistic giving a time 15 minutes too short. Not sure if its possible to change the defaults – maybe in Mapsource??
On the way home I used the “fastest route” and this turn out to be correct to within the minute!

On Sunday I connected the C510D to my computer and;

5) Installed SD card
6) Connected device and loaded up the “NICE” map
7) The Mapsource said it was finished.
8) I disconnected the USB but the system remained in the USB mode
9) After a while I pressed reset switch
10) When the unit booted up it had the message “Can’t unlock maps”
11) It seems that the System no longer sees UK & Ireland
12) I remove SD card and rebooted and the system gave the message “No detailed maps found that support routing. The Street pilot cannot be used without them”

At this point I contacted Garmin and after following their advice could not clear this error. They advised me to take it back and get a replacement. I duly did this and in all fairness Halfords who had none in stock arranged for one to be sent next day!

When I received the new unit I followed steps 1-7 above. Unfortunately the unit again locked up at step 8.

Not wishing to take the unit back I decided to delete the “gmapprom.img” file on the C510D and then load on all of UK & Ireland from the Mapsource program back into the C510D.

I rebooted the device and hey presto the device is working again!

Questions; Why is the gmapprom.img file 170,488KB and the supplementary file gmapsupp.img only 125,212 KB? What data is missing?

Another point to note is that the real time traffic GMT20 (that doesn’t have a manual) does not always have a radio signal. The top LED on the cigarette charge is green when the signal is present and goes yellow to red for no signal. The data stays in memory when no signal is available but is lost when the power is removed.

Overall I’m happy with the C510Deluxe and will post more as and when I have more to say…
