|

Hi,
recently I've purchased a PocketPc with a USB-serial cable adapter.
I've tried to use my Magellan Sportrak Pro with TomTom Routeplanner and CityPlanner, but when I go to GPS configuration I see only NMEA 0183v2 with different baud rates, and "serial on usb". My sportrak gives me the chance to set NMEA to : v1.5 APA, v1.5 XTE and v2.1 GSA, and baud rate to any of the availables on TomTom.
I don't get comunication between GPS and TomTom. Anybody has experience with this? What settings should I select?
Thanks a lot |

Set the SporTrak to NMEA v2.1 GSA and in TomTom select NMEA 0183 COM1. |

|

Hi,
I tried with 2.1 GSA and 4800 baud on SporTrak and NMEA 0183v2 4800 "Serial over USB" in TomTom CityMaps 1.00 (152). And no way.
I've a Toshiba e740, and to connect I use the pc-mobile.net usb host adapter and usb-serial converter (with its own driver for Pocket PC 2002 installed).
Any other suggestion? any positive experience? Anyone knows a serial terminal program for PPC 2002 to try if cable and NMEA work?
I don't want to buy a new CF GPS when I own a good GPS tha should work |

2.1 GSA should work, it usually works okay on the iPAQ's, but Toshiba's are a little different and have been known to have problems as they aren't serial, but USB. I would think the problem possibly lies at the USB to Serial driver you have installed, but wouldn't be able to say for sure without testing it myself.
You can use WinFast Navigator for the Pocket PC on our downloads page, this will allow you to connect and if you goto VIEW | DEVELOPMENT you should see an NMEA stream (lots of data starting with $GPGSA, $GPGSV etc). |

Now, I'm getting really mad!
I've tried Winfast Navigator, and worked at the first time... Adjusted 9600 bauds and runs smoothly. I get all info from GPS.
Althoug, with the same configuration TomTom doesn't work! I like TomTom, but maybe I should try other software...
Can you recommend me another with good Europe cartography?
Thanks a lot |

So you've tried TomTom GPS with NMEA 0183 @ 9600 ?
If that doesn't work, I would be very surprised as it's basically doing the same as WinFast Navigator.
Other applications which are good are CoPilot Live and Destinator. We have a review of both on our Software Review Page at http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/menu_gpsstreetrouting.php |
