I live in Leicestershire and work in Nottingham. My ICN 510 can take 20 minutes to acquire a Satellite signal in both these counties. I have just visited the South West (Croyde) and my ICN510 behaved impeccable, gaining a signal within a little as 30 seconds !!! I was though in a very good mobile phone signal area.
How can this be ? |

Croyde, as in Croyde Bay?
I've noticed a difference e.g. on Dartmoor recently, clear view to the sky, although cloudy, and loads of sats found and locked quite quickly, however, when driving along the Teign Valley, there were few signals getting through, and forget mobile phones in that area, and when driving under the electricity lines, I found myself frequently in the river.
I've read some people have a few problems in cities with tall buildings.
SiRF III has evidently improved the situation.
Sat Nav not perfect but I wouldn't want to go back to maps. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

The system can be slow to get a first fix if you don't have a good view of the sky or if you are moving (it needs to "see" the satellite for 30-60 seconds before it can lock on to it).
Weather conditions and mobile phones don't make any difference. _________________ Gone fishing! |

I understand that falling snow is the biggest weather problem. _________________ Richard

Yes it was Croyde Bay Devon.
I certainly wouldn’t want to go back to maps. Maps don’t tell you ETA, Distance to next turn (i.e. exit off motorway). Devon holiday was the first time I had used my 510 in anger and it really helped me out, although it did try to send me down a dirt track with a sign saying “No through road”.
I also paid for the Speed Camera POI’s which were invaluable. Worth the £2. I also spotted some new cameras on the M5 so I may get free lifetime subs |

I've been out in in a blizzard with my old GPS-V when it was -8 degrees and it worked fine. That was a few years ago, I'm not inclined to try it again anytime soon.
Lots of things cause problems for GPS receivers, but in my experience, the weather isn't one of them. _________________ Gone fishing! |
