I want a satnav system for my wife. Only need UK maps. So the 510 should be fine for me.

But the 910 has TTS - that would be really useful for her to give her added context - eg instead of wondering if 'turn left' means that tiny road that looks like a cul-de-sac or that slightly larger one 10m further on, she'll know the name of the road and can adjust based on signage etc.

but TTS is only on the 910. But the 910 is *way* overkill for her. Don't need ipod control. Don't need 12GB free space on a HDD. Don't need European or US maps.

How big are the TTS files? Couldn't they have given 510/710 owners an option to buy their own bigger card? Or do a 510-TTS package with a bigger card in it? You can buy really big SD cards these days.

Hi mrklaw.
I too would have prefered the 510 with TTS but alas I had to go for the 910 to get it.
Crazylegs is right about the file sizes. In a word they are way huuuuuuge.
May as well put the cost of a 10GB card on to the cost of the 510 and hey you've got the price of a 910, with some cash to spare. (Laughing Out Loud) :D
All that said I will just say it is an impressive unit.
I've read all the gripes about:
The Mount.
Mines rock solid and doesn't drop the connection even on the bumpiest of roads.
Slow Fix.
I have never had to wait more than 30 seconds for a fix and that includes the 8 seconds to boot up.
Dodgy Bluetooth.
Mine works fine with a Nokia 6230i. crystal clear speech and the facility to copy the phonebook over was the biz.

All in all one happy bunny.

Oh, and it gets me from A to B Embarassed

Think the tomtom's only support 4gb sd cards, scan disk do an 8gb card and thats the largest i have found, and that is well over £300 so would be cheaper to buy the 910 anyway once the card and 510 have been added together.

To be honest i dont have a problem with paying extra to get the bells and whistles, i am never going to be driving in the states and hardly ever in europe, already have a proper hands free kit and dont own an ipod, yet i still bought the 910. The reason it was what i had budgeted for and i wanted the TTS and i am glad that i paid the extra.

Regards

Peter

its also a marketing thing, as you say you dont need all the extra maps and features of the 910 and i would think 80% of potential owners dont need them either but many 910's are proberbly being sold on the TTS feature alone.

Without it I can see the 910 sales being a lot lower. They will always try to give you a reason to part with your cash for the better model and they try to do it with the one killer feature. TTS is it.

OK - just need to find dixons tax free with one in stock.

Is there a link to somewhere that you can download an example of the audio output demonstrating the text to speech?

Hi mrklaw.
Me again.
Not sure about a link to hear it, maybe others can help you with this.
But I have to say the TTS exceeded my expectations by a country mile.
Out of all the words that it has used (and boy it's used a few) I have only found 2 quirks so far.
It shortens the words Gardens to Gard, and Crescent to Cres.
But I can live with that for now till TT sort it.
(Logged with TT by the way).

One of the clearest Ive heard but not without its flaws. Tried a short sentence including Col (short for Colin) and it insists on giving me the military title of Colonel. Laughing
