Does anyone know whether the external antenna for the Go/300/500/700 is compatible with the new 510/710/910? Or is the GPS reception so good on the new models you don't need one? (i know you'll probably need one if you've got an athermic heat-reflecting windscreen)

Is the antenna for Go classic/300/500/700 different from the antenna for ONE?

Hi
Got a new 910 yesterday from PC world to replace my 700 and the connection is different for the antenna.

I have a solar windscreen and the new 910 does not pick up signals just like the 700 didn't, so I have had to order another antenna.

So I have a useless unit until the antenna comes
Thanks Tom Tom

Phil

Phil, have you tried the unit out of the vehicle and does it work this way? - you will have to switch the map back to "Western and Central Europe" this is located at change preferences/ manage maps/ switch maps and then select Western and Central Europe, without this selection my unit refused to acquire a lock I also needed to reset the unit (read the book to find the reset switch position - its near the connector underneath the device).
I don't run with a thermal windscreen but if you let the device acquire a lock external to the vehicle then introduce it to the car you may find it will work, my unit is quite happy to get a lock sat in the house which is well out of sight from the sky - Mike

Hi Mike

Yes it does work outside the car, in the house, even in the toilet through a 2 foot by 3 foot window (6 Sats).
But put it in the car even after a outside lock and nothing (lost signal).

My complaint about Tom Tom was I had this problem with the 700 which I have an external antenna for, now I have to buy another antenna because they have changed the connection and the unit is useless for navigation until that comes.

I don't think you will need an external antenna for these new devices. From everything I have read they have strong enough signals without one.

Phil, where have you positioned the device, I tried mine to the right hand side of the steering wheel (uk spec car) so it was very close to the A pillar - not very good at all, moved it to the middle of the screen and its been fine ever since, quite surprised it refuses to work in the car maybe your screen got a thicker titanium coating - Mike

Mike
The position of the unit is in the middle of the screen.

Went in halfords today and saw the Tom Tom one antenna for £19.90 and that fits. So now it works fine with that in the rear window.

Must be a very thick coating
Will have to cancel the mail order antennna

Phil

BTW it's a Ford Focus
