Has anyone got any practical experience of this? (available in beta form, covering the whole of Europe, for £59.99)

Certainly does the job. It occasionally has an odd idea of routing (don't they all!), but waypoints are very easy, so it's quick enough to set up a custom route. I have a slow 1GB SD card for it, and that is slow!. On a smaller but faster CF card, it is very good, but as I have a CF GPS, I'm stuck with slow...
It has rafts of POI's, but these don't appear as you navigate, and I can't see any way of setting up audible warnings (yet) so Speed Cameras are out for now. As this is a Beta release, I'm sure things will improve. I've used Tom Tom in the past, and the actual navigation seems much the same, the only real differences being in operating the software.
If you have any specific Q's, don't hesitate to ask, I'm sure one of us can try things out for you!

Cheers, Andy E.

Thanks guys - I've decided to buy a copy and give it a whirl. Support at Directions told me that people who bought the beta would get the final version when it is available, so that should sort out the POI warning problem

I'd be interested in your experience, Alix and Andy. I installed Pocket Navigator 6 and it seems to work OK, but if you stray from the correct route it seems to take much longer than TomTom to recalculate. I don't know if it's connected, but I have the application on the storage card with the maps, rather than on the PDA memory. I did the same with Mapopolis using the same card, and it seemed to work perfectly fast

A further observation, apart from the very late rerouting. I am using an iPAQ 2210 and the colour on the map display is much too pale and washed out. I have tried all combinations of screen brightness, but it's very difficult to see the map details in daylight. The same PDA gives perfectly good visibility for TomTom and CoPilot. Is this your experience, Alix or Andy (or anyone else!)?

Hi Robin2,
I have found the re-route to be very fast, unless a completely new route is required, where PN6 is quite slow anyway. Colours are fine and bright on my Acer n50 and Dell Axim X5, even in sunlight. Night colours are a little too bright, needing the backlight setting to be turned down.
I made my first long trip to Dartmoor on Saturday (150 mls). It was a good trip, with NP6 always spot-on. Tried coming back a different way (local recommendation!), and NP6 was quick to re-route all the time.
Overall I'm very satisfied with my purchase and I'm sure it will be better when the improvements are online (Truck mode, scout warnings etc).
Cheers, Andy E.

Thanks for your comments Andy. I may have expressed myself badly. When I said it was slow recalculating, I meant that you had to be some distance off route (about 500 yards) before it started recalculating. When it starts, it's very quick. 500 yards is way too much in a dense city centre, where you may want to turn off a route because of congestion. My experience is that I have passed 2 or 3 junctions before it starts to recalculate. TomTom is much quicker, recalculating after about 50-80 yards.
As far as screen brightness is concerned, that may be a problem with my iPAQ2210 (though TomTom and CoPilot show good contrast)
Robin

Yes, you're right, you do have to be a little way off route before PN6 notices! I've not relied on it in a built up area yet myself, so it hasn't caused me a problem (so far...)

I hope Directions/Infomap are watching this topic - it could be interesting for them as well...

Cheers, Andy E.

Yes, as it's a beta I have been sending my comments to Directions, and they have acknowledged them very promptly (not like TomTom support!)

Just sent emails to infomap@directions.ltd.uk and they were immediately acknowledged. I have had very prompt replies from Tomas to queries sent to the same address.

Hi
I have just recieved my free upgrade to the full version and the speedcamera database has to be imported using a program on the installation dvd and then copied manually onto the sd card. The truck option is available but have not tried it yet.

Regards

Theripper
