I have commited the cardinal sin, We have managed to loose the Product code card for the upgrade Tomtom V3 to V5...... yes I know I can hear you all now didn't you register it at mytomtom.... nope didn't you duplicate it and send a copy to the bank for safe keeping nope....
We contacted Tomtom who clearly thought we are software pirates and distrubuting to the whole world.
Just for the record We purchased the update from Tomtom directly the order is on their site, they asked us to fax copies of the bank statements proving we payed them for it.
They sent us a program to run on the PC that installed Tomtom to find the product code.... why because we have never typed that code into the PC, its input is into the PDA...... their final gambit was simply to say repurchase the software. They cannot give us a new product ID, and their activation servers don't capture that number when you activate the product so they can't or won't help.......
I know it must be possible to reverse engineer they product code from our PDA, I do not condune piracy but there are flaky copies out there..... all I want to do is to recover a license which we payed for and have right to use...... does anyone have any influence with Tomtom, we have tried to get help through the help desk and they have proved at best unhelpful.
We are seriously thinking about getting a Tomtom Go910 when they are available but with customer support like this I am going to look at the alternatives however good they new TT's are.
thanks for any help in advance..... |

When you registered the product the activation code is held at tomtom. Log into their site and you should see it.
I have two TTN5's and both activation codes are shown. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

Yes, arrogant and short sighted. I understand it was our fault loosing the code but are you not amazed they claim they cannot recover your product code... their servers don't capture the data on activation? I am not sure I believe the help desk monkeys as their grasp of technology is only seconded by their rude arrogance and useless customer service....
I could understand if I could not prove we had bought and payed for the product but to deny us use of that product because we failed to manually store a 'secret personal code' on a public facing 'secure tomtom server'
I am currently awaiting the release of the TT Go910 because I don't think there is anything better...... but the UK customer service is dreadful. Its almost woth buying it direct from the Nederlands and only dealing with them direct...... as the people representing Tomtom in the UK are at best not very good.
I am going to complaint to head office as I think their policy on Product codes and their treatment of their customers is dreadful.
Ahh thats better, got that off my chest...... |

I have had to ring the tomtom helpdesk a number of times. In the event I get put through to a UK operator I get nowhere at all. But if I get an operator in the Netherlands they seem to sort the problem for me. _________________ o2 XDA Stellar

| I can understand how frustrating it is for you and can't understand their attitude, especially as you can prove you purchased the software. TomTom obviously have a good share of the market and appear not too worried about losing customers here and there. But to be fair, it does say on the Product Code Card, keep this safe etc. I made sure I kept a record of my Device ID, the Product Code and the Activation Code. I just don't trust the 'big' companies to be too helpful should a problem arise. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

Hello,
Yes I accept its our fault ..... we lost the code, yes it does say clearly store it save it copy it.... sadly I am human and I make mistakes. What I don't expect is condescending arrogant treatment from help deskMonkeys at Tomtom, although its not their fault they only spout the scripted party line. I am supprised at their attitude for a Dutch organisation... maybe its only the UK office that sucks....
All they have acheived it getting free bad press, I will ensure as many people as I can get the know they are sadly failing to look after their existing customers..... despite producting excellent products (with a few faults like old maps.... but isn't that common with Satnav product in general)

It appears they will find any excuse to point the blame elsewhere, that's why I've followed everything to the letter. What are the chances of someone like us actually sueing the 'big boys' and if we did, what chance would there be of getting a result?
It also annoys me that if you or I decided to go to another company, we couldn't sell on our discs, even with the product code, because we only pay for a licence to use the software.
I originally purchased TTN3 then upgraded to 5, at the cheaper rate fortunately, but anyone who missed the deadline has to pay the full wack. I, and even those who paid the full price for both 3 and 5, have the 3 discs that are useless. If wouldn't be so bad for those who have paid the full price for both to be allowed to sell on. At least there would be a good chance they would continue to use TomTom and probably upgrade later.
The same with my Win98 and Millennium Discs, absolutely useless now I have XP. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

Applogies not needed but thanks.... :D Its very frustrating... its not even the money it's the principle...... you can still use your millenium windows disk and if you loose your CD key MS will replace it if you return your original disk along with proof of ownership they simply have stopped fixing Millenium and concentrate on XP or even vista... maybe Tomtom could learn from the real software giants and not alienate they customers.
take care

I agree, but I don't need to, especially as it, in my opinion, was the worst operating system they came up with.
I still believe it would pay the big companies to allow us to sell, or pass on, our (sorry, their) software.
My mate, who has been peering over my shoulder, and don't seem to want to go home, has just said. Tell him to write to the Managing Director of TomTom and if he can get someone to write it in Dutch, he may be on to a winner'.
Em. Trying to speak French when in France seems to bring them out of their shells and they can suddenly speak English and can be very helpful. His idea may just work. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

Yes, 12:45am. :D
But he's coming again later today.
But I'm not telling him you have a Dutch friend and you think his idea was good. I'll tell him the opposite. :P
Hope you are lucky and get your product code. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property
