|
|
I have a UK i3 v8 maps. I want to use it in the summer when i go driving in the states.
As recommended elsewhere on the forum i have obtained from the states a copy of Mapsource Metroguide USA 4.01, and a 256Mb Blank Transflash.
When I install the software, it cannot see the i3 (connected via usb)
and it doesnt appear to be able to export straight to the transflash via my usb card reader?
Help? advice? |

you will need to update the mapsource program itself. Updates are free from the Garmin site as long as you already have mapsource installed(which will have) _________________ i3 2.70(went to 2.82,3.0,3.1 but downgraded) with V8 map on microSD card
Metroguide Europe V7 & V8 (routable and indexed)
Metroguide N America V6 (routable and indexed) |

here's a quick 'how to' guide for using mg usa with your i3.
1.as beerbelly said do a free mapsource update to your pc.
2.put the blank card into the i3.
3.using the mapsource 'map tool' ,choose which areas you want to load to the i3.
4.if you want to check that the maps are on the i3 do this... the i3 still thinks its in the uk so you need to download a usa waypoint along with the maps to the i3...pick something like orlando airport or disney world..then run the i3 in simulation mode and choose the usa waypoint from favorites and then do a route to something nearby...
you probably know this already ,if not i hope it helps.. _________________ *************************** |

I know this is a bit sad, but some states it is illegal to use windscreen afixed devices, be it a phone or GPS. Best to check. This is definatly the case in California |

Hate To Be The Bearer Of Bad News. But As Far I Know Metro Guide Is Not Compatable With An i3. It Will Load On To The Unit But You Will Not Be Able To Navigate. You Need City Select or City Navigator.
Check Compatability on The GArmin Site.
I Tried It On My C320. Loaded No Problem But When I Went To Simulate A Journey It Kept Saying Route Calculation Error.
Purchased City Select USA And It Works No Problem. |

you need metroguide usa version 4.01....this is the ONLY version that navigates and gives you voice navigation..... _________________ *************************** |

I'm looking to do a similar thing and have found the advice on the forums to be very helpful, however, I did also contact Garmin to get an "official" response and to ask some other questions.
I was told that there was no N.America transflash card available and that it would be far cheaper for me to not buy City Navigator\Select and to simply buy another i3 in America with the maps already loaded!
This is probably good advice (as long as you know where you are going from the airport and can spare a bit of time to go shopping) but did leave some of other questions unanswered, so maybe anyone else can help?
Does anyone know what the average size for a US state map is? I've got a couple of transflash cards and was wondering if I'll need to invest in another one? My problem is I have someone currently in the US who could buy City Navigator for me as a gift and then bring it back to the UK. This might be cheaper than the UK's price and possibly cheaper than buying another i3 in the US.
Also if you have several states on one card can you navigate across state borders? Or do you need to navigate to and from the borders of each? |

Bert ,using metroguide usa the rough mb’s per state are ,florida 65mb, California 120mb, California & navada & Arizona 160mb..i’m sure city selects/navigators are slightly bigger in mb’s per state but this will give you an idea…crossing state lines causes no problems …I looked at circuit citys prices and the i2 is $240, the i3 $300 and the i5 $360, convert that to uk pounds and dearest works out at about £210… _________________ *************************** |

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll possibly have to buy a bigger transflash card as I need California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona so would possibly be scraping it with a 256Mb. If I go this route I'll post back in case anyone is interested.
Amazon (US) are selling City Navigator v7 for $116 which works out at approx £65. So if I can buy this in the US then even if I go for overkill with a 1Gb transflash for £30 it'll still be under £100!
Incidentally just looking at the Amazon (US) an additional customer comment has recently been added regarding City Select & Navigator and also the total size of all the maps. Obviously this information might not be correct but might be of interest to someone:
