i3 vs TomTom Navigator 5

The i3 is my first GPS unit, and after being bitten by the satnav bug I'm considering buying TomTom Navigator 5 for my PDA and selling the i3 on ebay, purely so I have one less thing to carry around.

Can anyone who's used both let me know how they compare please? One thing I really miss on the i3 (if it's possible to miss something you've never had) is not being able to reroute and avoid a section of road, so that's definitely +1 to TomTom, but I was wondering how the directions and mapping compare. I appreciate the i3 is a budget unit, but, aside from not being able to reroute effectively, I can't fault it.

I swapped from TT3 to the i3 and to be honest I find the i3 to be better.

Ok you haven't got choices of voices and so on but I find it more stable, my PDA used to crash a lot (which I know might say more about my PDA than TT).

IMHO if you don't want all the bells and whistles (and who really needs to know where the satelittes are in the sky) the i3 certainly holds it's as a sat nav tool.

Had both and all I can tell you is TomTom 500 ended up on eBay. You were really extremely precise in your analysis. Apart from the various re-routing options (and the insignificant bells & whistles of the TomTom), Garmin beats it hands down. If I want to re-route now, I just take whichever route I fancy in the knowledge that my i3 will eventually get me there. Not very scientific, I know but it's a sacrifice worth taking for the stability, ease of use, better routing and value and also better customer service and support by miles.

I did of course mean "the i3 holds it's own..."

Alix776, that is a good point, being able to pin point a location on a map as your destination was a useful feature but one I had forgotten.

There are of course many things which could sway a person either way but I personally would stick with the i3.

yes that true for my job the garmin when set to truck produce the same routes as the tomtom set at limited speed 54mph its down to personal taste at the end

At the end of the day the i3 does what it says it does at a bargin price, why spend £200+ for sat nav when you can pay £129.99

Ive had my i3 for a week and not had any problems. A mate at work has a PDA with Navigator 5 on it and its always freezing up on him, thinks he's going to get an i3 instead and use his PDA for everything else.

I've previously used an iPAQ with TTN3 and a Navman 3300 sleeve, and then with TTN5 and a Navman 3450.

But now, Garmin I3 all the way... 8)

I have used TT2, TT3 and TT5, and recently bought my wife an i3 from Halfords for £120. I am amazed at the performance of the i3 and its routing is as accurate as TT5. A few features on TT5 which will make me continue to use it (rather than nicking my wife's i3!)

Ability to create an itinerary with multiple waypoints
Ability to pick a point from the map as destination or waypoint
Ability to work with CheckPOInt for clear POI warnings
Speed indication on screen when following a route
More flexible detour facility[list=]
Having said that, the i3 is amazing value for money, seems very stable and I would be quite content to rely upon it as my only GPS if I didn't already own TT5
