As per subject, do they exist?

Looking for something to replace my lovely old (and big, and heavy) Garmin 12, but was also considering a BT GPS for my PDA (and navigation).
Figured why not combine the two - a new handheld for hiking, and a BT GPS for PDA / laptop use.

Fortuna GPSmart was the only such thing.
But Fortuna made a very bad job of it. It has now almost disappeared and they have not made another one. I think they made a mistake thinking that it was not a good idea. May be they are not capable of making a good handheld like Garmin/Magellan do.

I always thought such is a good all round form factor and I am very very surprised no one else so far has come up with another one.

A Garmin eTrex/GPS60 or Magellan eXplorist with built in bluetooth would be ideal.

The next best thing will be to get a bluetooth adapter for the handheld:

But now a separate BT GPS can cost less than $80 so it may be a good idea to get that instead. (The BT adapter was conceived when BT GPS cost as much as $200 or over)

Unless of course if you want PPC navigation via bluetooth and at the same time want to record (log) your activity which most handhelds are capable of. Then the bluetooth adapter is ideal.

Ahhh Fortuna GPSmart .. that was the one Smile

I'm still in two minds - GPS units (both BT and handheld) aren't real cheap here in Australia.
Thanks for the BT-serial adapter idea though! Smile
