Vista C and Mapsource

I've been using my Vista C for quite a while now with opensource maps, but I'm looking at buying one of the Garmin road maps for the UK before some fieldwork in Cumbria. However, looking at what I can buy, I'm very confused. Why don't Metroguide, Roads & Rec. and City Navigator work on the Vista C? Or do they work but without some features? Or is it just Garmin trying to get me to splash out on City Select?

On the other hand, if you know of any opensource/free maps of the Lakes, then I'd be very thankful
