I have pretty much decided to buy an iPAQ 4700, which GPS system/software works well with this? I'm looking for something with upto date maps and speed camera info. |

I would say that TomTom is the easiest program to use and you can add the pocketgps speed camera database very easily. You can also get traffic updates (subscription based, and has a lot of good features like full postcode search, itinerary, changable voices etc.
If your 4700 is running Pocket PC 2003 SE I would recommend you update the Rom before you install any software. Click on the link below
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/HandheldiPAQ/us/locate/1120_6089.html
Or go to www.hp.co.uk download drivers/support, enter 4700 tap on driver downloads and then search, select the PDA then the OS and you will see the page of updates.
TomTom
If you go for the TomTom program also update it by going to www.tomtom.com support, PDA nav, tomtom 5, updates/manuals, update 5.2xx _________________ Regards

Hi.
Read the review on the Globalsat BT338. It is a stunning GPS receiver. Team this up with TomTom software and a decent car mount and your Ipaq 4700 will be guiding you happily wherever you go.
You can see the review here...

wait. so there are 3 componants I need? PDA, GPS receiver and software?
Is it pretty much mix and match with the GPS and mapping software or are there 'bundles' that regularly go together? ie. if I want the 4700 and tom tom software can I buy any old cheapo GPS gizmo?
Does the GPS unit itself really make any difference...? |

I would not buy a low-end GPS if you have a high end PDA. That is like buying the best PC and getting the worst graphics card, both components to get the best result have to be good. Most of the newer GPS receivers are coming with SiRF STAR III chipsets, which are high sensitivity which means that they will work through heated reflective windscreens and in poor weather conditions.
I personally have the Holux GR 236 which is SiRF STAR III and has a removable battery which means that once the battery dies in a couple of years (as they do) you can replace easily and don’t have to buy another GPS receiver. This receiver also has the ability to be used as a cabled receiver with an extra cable. _________________ Regards

ok, so far so good.
I also want some kind of cellular internet connection - firstly for downloading my e-mail, but it would also be useful if I could get the tom tom or whatever giving me realtime traffic info.
Any recomendations? And which port does the GPS plug into and will it get in the way of the cellular modem? |

The GPS uses Bluetooth so it is not a physical port but it is COM 8, you can use a Bluetooth mobile phone to connect to the Intertnet via GPRS to get your email. I have a link if you want to PM you the link on totalpda's website. _________________ Regards

the tomtom GPS seems to come in bluetooth and 'wired', i would probably go with wired as it's cheaper (and i already busted my budget just with the 4700 :D ) unless there's a good reason why the bluetooth is better.
Also, I see the bluetooth gps comes with a 12v car lead - but I assume the pda does too - so I guess that means I have to run one off the battery...? Does the 'wired' one takes power from the PDA or does that require separate power as well...? |

Have you got the 4700 yet? The PDA does not come as standard with a car charger, if you are going for a wired system we can supply you with a cable that will power your cabled GPS and charge the PDA at the same time. _________________ Regards

not yet... :D
So, I'm looking at -
4700
dual 12v power cable
tom tom 5 software
a GPS receiver of some kind
...and a way to make it internet connected. I don't have a bluetooth phone, or any desire to upgrade the phone I have. So I'm looking for a 4700 compatible cellular modem - what do you recomend?
I saw a cool one that came with a convertor to allow it to be used in a laptop as well - but that was on a US site, do we have anything similar over here? That would be very useful. And no, my laptop doesn't have bluetooth either! |

ok, i see from your site that you don't sell gprs modems of any kind, so what's the best deal your can give me on -
4700, tom tom software + tomtom wired receiver, dual 12v power cable? |

You would have to pm me and i get a sales person to advise you. I do not recommend the GPRS cards as they can be tricky. _________________ Regards
