Hi
I'm new to Sat Nav
Just trialing the new Sony NV-U50
But can anyone advise me on how to download the speedcamera database into the Sony - Its so new its not listed yet, but I believe it uses NAVTEQ maps if that helps?
Regards
Rob :-) |

The SONY sat nav is based on the Navman iCN 600 series and uses Tele Atlas maps. from the screenshot of the SONY, the software is identical to Smart ST.
Try following the instructions for Navman which can be found 'here'

Wrong unit, Ian. The one mentioned by Rob is Sony's own. Rob, are there any instructions in the manual regarding the importation of Custom POIs? Is the manual available as a .pdf file on a CD? If so, could you email a copy to me, using the address on my Email button? _________________ Tim |

Further research on the SONY products reveals that the 'new' NV-U50G is in fact vastly different to the earlier NV-U which the Google search originally revealed.
It does indeed use NAVTEQ map data.

Don't worry about the manual; found it on Sony's website. A quick scan makes no mention of Custom POIs but I'll look more closely when I have time. _________________ Tim |

Thanks for all the reply's
I have searched the manual - CD manual - and the dedicated Sony website linked to from the CD, no mention of adding POI's - Its looking like it cannot be done unless you know different???
Another problem I have found with it is you can only input the first few digits of a postcode in the town field (or select a town) then next field you select road name & house number.
Problem is if there is more than 1 road by that name in a town or If its a long road - and if the houses have names not numbers (or say a farm) it only finds the road you are then down to driving slowley along looking for the address, so its great for joe public, but to use it as a delivery driver say, then no use.
It has some very good points though, but without speed (opps safty) camra database & poor postcode usage I may think again for my own use.
Thanks for having a look though :-)

|

Hi
This is just my point of view, but I've now been trialing a TomTom with the safty camera database loaded, at first I thought it was a great idea, (after being flashed a few years ago & not wanting it to happen again) but now I'm not so sure:
First thing is its very anoying driving round locally if you have a lot of cameras, you know your local speed cameras, but even so get the alarm.
But the other thing is, if you are entering an unknown area & see camera signs everywhere you stay very alert, but with this system you look at the screen and relax, trouble is there is a road near me that has had the camera signs put up, there are no fixed cameras, but a camera van is parked up regular.
So my thought is its proberbly better to not have the database - stay alert & just slow down a bit, this way you spot any cameras (or Vans) & everyone is safe
Regards
